I really wanted to make something in the lineage of that type of music, but doing it, uh, with just everything that's available now.

Um, so that sideman gig affords me this almost co-leader status, even though it's Steve's band and it's very much his thing.

He's very generous with the music, with the time, with the space, with the dynamic of the band.
