Pat Day

One part of my life that I just kind of touched on briefly in my act was how my dad would take me to the racetrack when I was little.

And because my dad was about 5'4", he loved going down to the paddock and just teasing the jockeys and say things like to Pat Day and Angel Morales and some of the other jockeys.

Willie Shoemaker, he would say, you're just a little fella, ain't ya? And so I used to have just sort of charming stories about my childhood.

And then I started talking to our friends from the way back in and are you really winning? And they were like, um...

[laughs]

Pat Day.

I mean, Diane Sawyer.

Who's the guy-

Yeah.

And he talked to guys like Pat Day and Shoemaker, Willie Shoemaker, and say, you're just a little fella, ain't you? And it just made him feel like a big guy.

But my dad was a gambling addict.

And I want to encourage folks.

I had a horse that went off as a favorite in the Tampa Bay Derby.

Actually, Pat Day flew down to ride him, named Bunkin' Ted.

Named him after two contractors in eastern Kentucky.

Anyway, he was

Yeah.

You know? Is a lot of, uh, you know, Pat Day's and Shoemaker's and-

Yeah, they're all-

... those kinda guys

So it gave me a little edge and, you know, I just felt nobody teaches you this, that you just got the feeling.

And I kinda like was getting ...

Like, I knew that I had an extra something there that, like Pat Day used to say, "God gives you these-
