Parasocial interaction

Yeah.

Parasocial says, in my humble opinion, voting of the lesser evil is still endorsing it.

Yeah.

Fair enough.

The following is based on insights provided by Lydia Gangielowska in a conversation we had in our living room.

Today I'm going to discuss the role of parasocial relationships in generating object constancy and introject constancy in people with cluster B personality disorders.

Now, you must admit this is a mouthful.

And I will try to translate all this into proper English.

And this is how it is defined.

A one-sided, pay attention to every word, a one-sided emotional connection between an individual and a real or imaginary individual that they do not know at all, typically a celebrity, performer, media figure, social media influencer, or artificial intelligence-based agent.

Parasocial relationships are theorized to resemble social relationships in many ways.

involving feelings of intimacy, trust, sense of immediacy, mutual awareness and reciprocity, but they do not involve mutual development and awareness as seen in traditional interpersonal relationships.

And here's what I'll notice.

The people who form these type of contents, right? You can tell, well, I'll get to this point in a minute, but parasocial relationships, right? So you have a dude who's listening to this girl pretend to be his girlfriend, and they don't have the recognition that it's fake.

They don't have the mental capacity to keep the barrier between content and reality right and so I say this with a lot of things whether it's right you can you can form parasocial relationships with with a lot of different things whether it's movies music sports pro wrestling I think is the next closest community I want to use to You see a lot of these dudes who watch Alexa Bliss or Stephanie Vaquer.

So I'll say something along the lines of Stephanie Vaquer is attractive.

Understanding that she's a real human being on the other end of the screen.

um sonia deville daria ray now on um tna she's still in i think a legal battle about a stalker

and it's just a lot of it is because they these type of people they are very socially restrained they don't have a lot of social cues probably battle with a lot of mental illness and they form these parasocial relationships where they think this one-on-one content, back to the ASMR, where you form this sort of almost relationship, and you get like three or four uploads a month, or excuse me, three or four uploads a week, depending on the creator, and it's personalized towards you, but you don't really recognize that this person has like... 300 million in the case of someone like a gba smr who's probably the biggest name she has like 200 million subscribers or something not probably not that much but it's close to like 3 million subscribers i think um at this point i don't actually know she used to be very popular she was actually what introduced me to the genre of content because she was pushed by the algorithm big time about about 10 years ago um 10 5 to 10 years ago she was like the big thing that youtube pushed to get people into this type of content.

So along the way, I've just been very careful about parasocial engagement.

I don't like that.

Parasocial.

I want to have a prosocial relationship.

I want to encourage people to be prosocial.

And what's the internet controversy? What's the pearl clutching? It's like the e-entertainment, TMZ, celebrity cancel culture, all that stuff.

So H3H3 is the perfect example of this era of content creation, the slop, the podcasters, the talking head, the parasocial relationship, the e-begging, man, whatever happened to art, film, making stuff.

Parasocial relationships are not, in my estimation, healthy from a neurobiological standpoint.

It's all parasocial.

Social media was a mistake.

Parasocial, but then also this like... hate baiting that goes on right like like people just they just love to hate her because it gets lots of clicks on twitter

oh yeah as jack's films once said drama is more popular than content

Yeah, it absolutely is.

The Fatal Four.

No parasocial relationships to worry about here.

Because we're all your best friends and we love you.

That's right.

That's right.

Also...

Parasocial relationships, absolutely to be worried about.

What are you talking about?

So it's a hugely uneven relationship.

So we can over-rely on these parasocial relationships even when they are far distant from anything that we can conceivably achieve or anything that we might want to achieve ultimately when we step back.

So it's easy to be... sort of misled by this.

To take just one random example and, you know, maybe to share a personal story.

I feel

like the parasocial relationships, like, it affects how people talk to you in the real world, too.

Because I can kind of tell sometimes when people talk to me, and it's like they think they know me already, and I don't really know them.

They feel real comfortable, like, saying certain things or touching you.
