Paradox

Now, whenever we have a paradox, we can typically resolve them by removing one of the assumptions upon which the paradox sits.

So, for example, with the famous Fermi paradox, which is where are the aliens, we can resolve that by trivially removing the assumption that aliens exist.

Paradox resolved.

So what are the assumptions here? Well, there are three basic ingredients.

The principle of unitarity, which we've already met.

Okay, yeah, I know him.

And he, he started doing this thing, uh, uh, Hunter's Tips, 'cause his real name is Hunter.

Uh-huh.

And he got this little logo thing that pops open with two guns and smoke just comes out like, "Hunter's Tip," like that, [laughs] and he'll say something goofy.

Yeah, yeah.

Now, see, it's funny, though.

F- for those who know about this crap, they're gonna know the name Bob Lazar.

You know, Bob Lazar.

Nor can a man who is near the surface of the sea breathe any more than if he were full five hundred fathom down.

It is only fair to the Stoics to add that Paradoxes were quite the order of the day in Greece, though they greatly outdid other schools in producing them.

Socrates himself was the father of Paradox.

Epicurus maintained as staunchly as any Stoic that no wise man is unhappy, and, if he be not belied, went the length of declaring that the wise man, if put into the bull of Phalaris, would exclaim, "'How delightful! How little I mind this!' It is out of keeping with common sense to draw a hard and fast distinction between good and bad.

What's happening here? Paul gives four paradoxes highlighting our vulnerability with God's victory.

Paradox number one, we are afflicted, but not crushed.

Paul says we are afflicted in every way.

Paul...

We will be squeezed.

And at times that is very painful as well.

Paradox number two, perplexed, but not driven to despair.

In the Greek here, Paul's using a rhyming wordplay.

The same direction, not outward, but inward toward a source that doesn't dry up when circumstances fall apart.

So Raising Paradox isn't a book about escaping the world, right? It's about learning how to inhabit in it fully, about widening our perspectives.
