While I was on my bucket list, a dream was to take a boat down to Amazon.

So as I was traveling north, I was in the state of Maranhão, which is like south of the state of Pará.

But, you know, I picked up information along the way as far as still using music as my map.

So in Marignane, I met a friend from Pará who told me about Karim Bol, which is a rhythm from Pará.

So then I went to Pará.

And from there, I eventually went to Belém, which is like the port city of the Amazon.

And I ended up taking a, they have like ferry boats that go down there.

Yeah.

Everything grows there.

But how long it would take us to cross the mountains and the forest and descend the river, we must find out by trial.

Who has yet heard of Gonzalo Pizarro and his fatal yet famous expedition into the land of cinnamon? A century elapsed, 1530 to 1637, before anyone ascended from Pará to Quito by way of the Rio Napo.

To be honest, it was how close it was because my city, my hometown is called Belém.

And it's a small city in the state of Pará in Brazil, which is on the very top of the country.

So we're pretty much close to the water.

And then literally we had a straight flight to Miami, which was like five hours.

Now, the major producer of cacao in Brazil is Pará, which is in the Amazon rainforest.

This farmer, his grandparents immigrated from Germany to Brazil, and they tried to plant coffee in Espírito Santo, which is next to the ocean.

And it just didn't work out.

The international outrage was immediate, but it still took three years to get the two men back.

In 1996, federal police finally recaptured them, Darli in a town on the Trans-Amazonian Highway, deep in the state of Pará, and Darcy back in Paraná, the family's old home state, traveling on false papers under a borrowed name.

The name on those papers was Daniel.

Father and son served out more time.

The Brazil nut comes from Bertholletia excelsa, a towering tree native to the Amazon basis-- basin, found across Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and in smaller numbers in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Guyana.

Indigenous Amazonian peoples had been eating these seeds for generations before Europe- European contact, and Portuguese colonists exported them from the Pará region of Brazil, starting in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which is where both the tree's common name and its old scientific adjacent nickname, castanha do pará, come from.

Here's a detail that surprises a lot of people.

Despite the name, Brazil is not the world's top exporter anymore.

There might have been even more deaths if doctors in Brazil did not know how to recognize and treat the disease promptly.

and Moises Silva, a microbiologist at the Federal University in Para, in Belim.

Brazil's toll that year was about four times the previous number, and in Belim it was about seven times higher, flooding the city's hospitals and forcing a reckoning.

City officials adopted myriad methods in response, from increasing common-sense solutions like garbage disposal and treatment of sewage, to collaborating with academic scientists like Dr. Silva.
