Paper Moon

So again, I guess it goes back to just kind of being like, wow, they're just sitting here and everyone's looking at the same stuff but like why don't we introduce more, again, just kind of digging up and showing people, yeah, what else is out there? What's been forgotten?

I suppose that brings us to this, to today's topic, which is Peter Bogdanovich's mask from 1985, which is kind of a weird decade for Peter Bogdanovich because of course you had him in the 1970s with films like paper moon, what's up doc, the last picture show.

And he was this like tremendous filmmaker working within the, I'd say the studio system.

He was also tangibly linked to the new Hollywood movement of that period.

And there's a lot of people just trying to make their way in those little areas of the world.

And it's kind of, I think that's sort of that, panning over and like well let's just see what's going on this little tiny you know and then yeah we get in we're outside of his bedroom and don't even really get to we don't even see his face fully you know in the beginning it's like

and it almost has that california golden sunlight doesn't it and this is shot by of course uh lazlo kovacs who would do paper moon and targets with bogdanovich he did the last movie with dennis hopper which is like one of the craziest gonzo films of the new hollywood period and the film we've mentioned already one or two times he would do five easy pieces which i think there is a similarity to this film so With your love of 35mm or film in general, this must be like catnip to you when you see this film, because it looks stunning, it's grounded, it's beautifully lay-even.

Yeah, I think that it's so funny that, like, it's not known as a Bogdanovich film.

... people who may not know at home, Peter Bogdanovich is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.

He made, like, The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon, and one of my favorite movies of all time, his debut film, Targets, which is one of the most upsetting but also just, like, overtly just great pieces of American media.

I cannot over-hype this movie.

Um, uh, it's about, like, a, a, a, a, a mass shooter goes to a drive-in, uh, and tries to shoot people.

Yeah, so it was a 10-week directing course with Peter Bogdanovich where we got to watch all of his favorite movies along with some of his movies that he made.

So, like, we watched Paper Moon.

But after every class.

Oh, yeah, Last Picture Show as well.

they try i think they try to make him do it in color and then they're like yeah yeah we'll put it in black and white later and he was like absolutely yeah yeah

yeah yeah good movie young frankenstein i haven't seen that in a long time um yeah good black and white movie actually speaking of a movie from the 70s that is black and white that again was like a choice is paper moon have you seen paper moon okay so this is like a big recommendation i jump on so a lot of the time on the show i've spent saying that like oh um people need to watch children of men because it's really influential on like

the

sort of sci-fi genres we've been given with like you know fatherhood figure and a child mandalorian and you know last of us but i'm also like in a way paper moon is also very influential on that.

Not a science fiction film at all.

But Paper Moon is set in the 30s in the Dust Bowl in the Great Depression.

And you've got real-life father and daughter Ryan O'Neill and Tatum O'Neill.

Tatum O'Neill, who's like eight years old and would win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress or Best Actress even, and is still the youngest recipient of the Best Actor Award.
