What's he supposed to do? Epstein was found dead in his cell at the notorious jail in Manhattan in August 2019 while he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges, with his death ruled as a suicide.

Mercy, who was in the prison between January and November 2019, has now spoken about Epstein in a new BBC Panorama documentary, which airs tonight.

He said, I believed he killed himself because I observed him for many, many hours.

I observed his decline.

[upbeat music] Now, twenty-five years after the attacks of September the 11th, new evidence is raising, uh, fresh questions about one of the men who helped two of the hijackers after they arrived in America.

BBC Panama, or um, BBC Panorama and Radio Four have been investigating Omar al-Bayoumi, the Saudi national arrested by British police just days after 9/11, having recently left America.

He was never extradited back to the US, although compelling evidence against him was uncovered by British police and shared with the FBI.

And then after it ended up on BBC Panorama, different news groups across Europe started to ask for the work.

And so it ended up in Germany and Sweden.

I remember BBC Radio using the audio from the video and And essentially I still went back to uni.

Such an emotional and vulnerable statement from her, I thought, when she was saying she was almost desperate to get it out there, and, and obviously really struggling to keep it all together.

... and Panorama because of course it was Earl Spencer who introduced Bashir to Diana, so perhaps we'll hear more from Earl Spencer's perspective about that.

I'm glad you raised the media there particularly because I want to just, uh, I wanna go through this quote to just remind us all, refresh our memories about this, this quite powerful, uh, line that, uh, Charles Spencer said at Diana's funeral, which was, quote, "She would want us today to pledge ourselves to protecting her beloved boys, William and Harry, from a similar fate, and I do this here, Diana, on your behalf.

The problem was that she could never dictate when the media would stop using her.

The most dramatic example came in November 1995, when BBC Panorama broadcast Martin Bashir's explosive interview with Diana.

More than 20 million people in Britain watched as she discussed bulimia, infidelity, loneliness, and the breakdown of her marriage.

She acknowledged her relationship with James Hewitt and delivered the line that would define the program, explaining that there had always been three people in her marriage, making it rather crowded.

I mean, I, I think, I think this is also the result of the huge BBC TV Panorama scandal.

These books are fascinating for people to read because it's after all lifting the lid on a secret world and, uh, always damaging that world, um, so why not add to it? But I do think if he's, if this is an honest book, I, I do think what Diana felt at that time is terribly important in that marriage.

My only question is did Diana confide in her younger brother? I, I, I just wonder, uh, whether that really did happen, that she told him about her misery and all the rest.

On the other hand, one must, uh, um, uh, appreciate that the BBC Panorama program only got access to Diana because of Charles.

He made the introduction, so clearly she trusted him.
