The old man was not seen again.

In the following weeks, attacks from the local Paiute Indian tribe were responsible for the party losing almost 40 of their cattle.

This is extremely shocking for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the Paiute tribe had first appeared friendly to the migrants, sharing supplies with them and even directing them onto trails that would take them westward.

But at some point, the relationship had soured, and the people known for their respect and reverence of the natural world appeared to have no problem slaughtering the wagon train's animal accompaniment in an attempt to slow down or even stop the party dead in their tracks.

With nearly all the cattle gone, one particular party member stopped to bury his wagon for safekeeping.

Two of his number stayed with him to help, but they returned without him, reporting they had been attacked by Paiutes, murdered and scalped.

By the end of October, the party was forced to make camp around Truckee Lake in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains.

The Utes, Paiutes, and Goshutes, Shoshone, Navajo, might have something else to say about that.

We'll see.

So the point number two is that it was the future city that the Dead Sea Scroll authors saw and envisioned was divided into square blocks like a checkerboard, east to west and north to south.

Now, you guys know when indigenous people say something, it's true, okay? Most of the time, there's some truth to that.

So the Paiute people had a chief.

back in in like the earlier days of nevada lovelock nevada and the chief's daughter's name was sarah she actually wrote a whole book speaking about her life and what she went through and in an excerpt of this book she speaks about the siteka which are red-haired giants that completely terrorized the unaliving and eating the Paiute people.

They're eating their loved ones in the grave, like the corpses of them, their resources.

It's like the days of Noah all over again.

Anyway, they end up getting into a huge battle, right? And Sarah describes them being so strong that when, you know, the bow and arrows were shot at them, they would jump up into the air, whoosh, grab it and jump back down to the ground.

Like they were incredibly strong.

But the thing is the Paiute people had the numbers.

Yeah, I know.

I'm excited to see it and be able, I mean, I move around and, you know, travel and do so many different things like, hey, it would be great to know I am approach, I am crossing this border, or I'm now, you know, not this the like welcome to Washington, but oh, now I'm on Paiute lands or now I'm on Crow or Cree or who- whomever it might be.

It's just a neat thing to be able to have that acknowledgement, even if it's in my brain as I drive, you know, that gratitude for permission to cross and things.

I'm, I'm excited for it, so I'm excited to see where that goes for you and how, how it evolves 'cause there's ideas fermenting in my brain of like, oh, I can see this connection with Strava or this connection with, you know, Garmin or something else.

The Hopis are descendants.

They have the Uto-Aztecan language, the Shoshone, the Paiute, the Ute.

I can just run down the list and they all have a form of the same root of the language of the Aztecs.

And so I think the evidence is clear, but nobody's going to look at this stuff.

And Cache, Tooele, and Salt Lake counties were a bit higher, averaging about $4.38 per gallon throughout Cache, Tooele, and Salt Lake counties here in northern Utah.

Not as bad as the $4.80 per gallon that people will be seeing in Paiute and Rich counties here.

Also, you know, above 450 for Daggett, Wayne and Beaver counties.

Even though sitting bull no longer had any official authority he was still revered by the Lakota something the reservation agents greatly resented.

In the late 1980s a Paiute religious leader named Wovoka began traveling from tribe to tribe and prophesizing a resurgence of the Native People something which became known as Ghost Dance Movement.

This worried the government because they feared that it might cause the native Americans to rise up again and begin a new war.

They were particularly concerned about the ghost dance movement gaining support from prominent leaders and at the time there was no living leader greater than Sitting Bull.

So together, they really comprise this very strong team of minds.

And it's just another good character that I get to introduce in the books, while at the same time developing Porter's personal life, which over the last three books has been him going from being a single guy coming out of the army to now somebody who is engaged to be married to a Paiute state detective that he met in the second story in the series.

And so that relationship has developed and there's all sorts of other things that are going on with the other members of his department, all of whom have their own quirks and fascinating facets of her life.
