P-90

Of a vintage PAF Alnico magnet, the least likely one that you would find would be Alnico 3.

The history of P90s is that it wouldn't be uncommon for an early 52, 53 era P90 in the Les Paul to have Alnico 3 bar magnets that were thicker than an eighth of an inch.

They're easily identifiable.

You don't want a 330.

Any kind of volume, it's going to feed back.

A 335 would probably be pretty good.

He had a, he's, he's got a gold top, modern, you know.

Well, he wanted to swap out the pickups.

Problem is the pickups he wanted to put in are just a tiny bit taller.

Yeah.

And historically, I wasn't a big fan of P90s.

But he said, why don't we try a P90 in the bridge just to start? Because it's still single coil.

But it's beefier.

But if you choose a cap that's like half the value or something, you can use more of the volume knob, okay? So what I do, why a volume pedal is so important and is different than the volume on your guitar, like the volume on your guitar starts...

starts... like P90s are great at cleaning up.

But if you're on a humbucker guitar, if you ever notice when you start turning down, it gets a little muddier.

So I like having a volume pedal because if I want the sound of the guitar on 10, but it's still hitting the amp too hard, I just back off the volume pedal a little bit.

Interesting.

Right? So...

But I mean, obviously, it's one of the things I love about P90s.

They clean up great.

See, I like the Special.

I like the Special with the P90s.

I guess they both have P90s.

But no, there's something I like even more than that.

Most guitarists trying to get a traditional jazz sound immediately start rolling off treble, but Green went after something much more mid-focused.

Combine that with a hollow guitar in P90s and you get that unmistakable Grant Green attack, almost percussive when he hits a note.

There is also very little between Grant Green and the amplifier.

Absolutely no pedals or pedal board.
