Preface and author's note.

Ozma of Oz, a record of her adventures with Dorothy Gale of Kansas, The Yellow Hen, The Scarecrow, The Tin Woodman, Tik-Tok, The Cowardly Lion, and The Hungry Tiger.

Besides other good people too numerous to mention faithfully recorded herein.

And if you're reading the books, in the books, The Wizard of Oz is first and then Marvelous, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, then Marvelous Land, Land of Oz.

Which shows the origin of, uh, Ozma, Tip becoming Ozma, Jack Pumpkinhead, and stuff like that.

So it's cool they skip The Wizard of Oz.

Everyone's very familiar with that story, and they kinda move into the other ones.

And so this one also is kinda following the third book, Ozma of Oz, as well.

And it's also kinda bringing in other characters from throughout the, uh, the whole line of books that don't kinda show up later.

So, um, like Shaggy Man, who m- most people probably don't know, kinda makes an appear- makes an appearance.

Wait, really? Baum wrote this?

this?He didn't write the electroshock therapy, but Return to Oz draws heavily from Baum's second and third books, The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz.

If you read Baum's original text without the rosy filter of 20th century pop culture, his world is deeply unsettling.

Unsettling how? Like, just weird?

Right, because they didn't stop at the first book.

This anime covers four of Baum's novels over its run.

You get The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, and The Emerald City of Oz.

And because it's a TV series, they don't have to compress the plot into a tight two-hour, three-act movie structure.
