Oxford

We're both kind of French this morning,

huh? So the answer to this, this is the black Oxford.

It was discovered around 1790, and this became a favorite across central and southern Maine.

The fruit skin, again, this can deepen from a dark purple, from a red to turn purple, and hence that's where the name comes from.

Stored exceptionally well during the Maine winters when fresh fruit was otherwise scarce.

The Black Oxford later became much harder to find, but orchardists helped to revive it as interest in Maine's heirloom apples returned.

I've been surveying some of the Oxford County residents at our newsroom and say, have you ever tried this apple or heard of this apple? I'm hearing some no's so far.

The Black Oxford sounds like a barnyard animal.
