Now, Speaker, that agenda is framed around three big national problems.

We've got to build more homes for Australians, we've got to help renters get into a better position, and we've got to get more Australians into home ownership.

Now Speaker, we are making a stack of progress against each of these three goals, but we recognise that we've got a lot more work to do here.

So Speaker, just coming to our policies, the combined effect of our supply measures as a government is going to build an additional 400,000 homes for Australians.

I'll remind them they didn't do that once while they were in government.

They didn't do a single thing to help renters in the entire nine years.

Now, Speaker, I want to finish on home ownership because this is something that my party passionately believes in.

We see a broken housing market where a young person in this country, a young low-income couple, is half as likely to own their own home in our country than they were in the year that I was born.

Yeah, George Bush II,

who wanted the Homeownership Society.

And that's what gave rise to the whole housing debacle financial crisis, because he decided everyone should own a home.

The government's lending up to 34% of new mortgages itself.

The home ownership rate at this point has gone from 61% in 1951 to nearly 70% by 1966.

So there's a big post-war shift into home ownership.

It's really starting to take off.

But I just think it's really interesting because it's not just the fact that you could get, A, a cheap loan, B, for 40 years.
