So this is another book that is not about software engineering particularly, or at all, uh, 'cause it's from the early '80s, and it's a classic and it is still very relevant to software engineering and ever more relevant than, uh, even more relevant t-today than it used to be.

Uh, and if you've never r- or you don't know who Deming is, he had this amazing career where in the '30s he basically invented statistical sampling to help with the U.S. Census.

And then in the '50s, he went to Japan and he basically had all the leaders of Japan, all the economic, r- factory people from Japan, he explained statistical sampling to them and helped them invent just-in-time delivery systems.

And then in the '80s, when he was like 80, or '70s, uh, he wrote this book, Out of the Crisis, uh, about how American manufacturing was in the dumps and why it was in the dumps.

And if you know, The New Economics second edition, uh, came out in ninety-four, March ninety-four, after Dr. Deming had passed away.

Balaji ReddieGUEST
7:40
And so in, in the 1986 edition in Out of the Crisis, he brought in adopt and institute leadership, and he said the aim of leadership should be to help people and machines do a better job.
Balaji ReddieGUEST
7:51
And he elaborated this a bit more in the 1990 edition, saying, "Adopt and institute leadership for the management of people, recognizing their different abilities, capabilities, and aspirations." And then he adds, "The aim of leadership should be to help people, machines, and gadgets do a better job.
