Our Song

Um, it just caught my attention right away, and then, yeah, I just, I just love that first album.

Um, I thought Our Song was, like, one of the best-

Oh

... country songs I'd ever heard.

And, um, I always tell them that back in the day, two thousand eight, I was just using YouTube, and I ran into the "Love Story" music video, and I thought, "This is a really cool song, and this is a really cool music video." And then I saw the "You Belong with Me" music video, and I listened to some of her songs at that point.

Then I started listening to her other songs, primarily "Our Song" and, um, "You Dropped Some of My Guitar," the big radio hits, and I liked it so much.

And I was watching the VMAs live in two thousand nine on TV, and I saw that big Kanye incident happen.

I was shocked, uh, appalled by what happened, and I thought that that was, uh, really, uh, something that he should not have done.

I could see it happen for her birthday, maybe get announced sometime later this year and come out for her birthday.

But at this point, I think the most logical thing would be Debut TV and Rep Deluxe happening sometime in 2027.

And then when she tours in late 2027, most likely, or mid-2027, which I think the, like, earliest that she could tour, she would have enough songs to play along with the, uh, the, what do we say, the four songs of The Encore and the original 12 songs, total 16 songs of Showgirl.

Y- yeah, I think it gets confusing on the Rep because she said in that Grammy interview all her music has been re-recorded.

What is, do you remember, like, the first country song that you ever had, like, a visceral, emotional reaction to?

Our Song, Taylor Swift.

Okay.

... memory.

I was in a car with my best friend, my best friend's mom, and her two sisters, and we had Our Song come on the radio.

And we were like, "What is this?" And we put the windows down, and we are just like, "This-"

Yeah.

Uh, Our Song.

Other, other Taylor Swift's pieces that use what the scholar Jocelyn Neal once called the time shift paradigm, when something changes over the course of the song, the chorus evolves.

You know, typically the chorus is the same lyrics every time.

And so, uh, of course, she used it in a very different way, which was that then peop- You know, she would post about her music, and then all these people she didn't know would come comment on it.

And she would spe- And people who, you know, around her then would tell me she would spend hours and hours on the computer just, like, responding to messages, making sure the people who were telling her how much her music meant to them, making sure that they felt seen and- Um, she just realized very early on how critical that connection was, and I think even those fans on MySpace helped with her radio success because she would tell them, you know, to urge them to call stations, tell them you wanna hear "Tim McGraw" or "Our Song," and, and they did.

And so yeah, that was a critical part of her fan base early on.

I, I would love to be a fly on the wall when you were doing this research, because it has got to be exactly.

Yes.

But if you think it's just gonna be an- the announcement, maybe she would announce it the 24th, which would be the true 20-year anniversary, which is insane, 'cause I remember being on the bus in elementary school and listening to, like, it was always, um, Our Song or Teardrops on My Guitar.

Of course.

Definitely the first two.

Yeah.

And I think one reason that I'm so, I'm so critical of Taylor Swift in the sense is that I have been a fan since Our Song.

I have been a fan since the beginning.

Oh, yeah.

I think it was like, I can't remember if it was fifth or sixth grade for me.

Somewhere in elementary school, like late elementary school, I did a talent show performance of Our Song with two of my friends.

in my class.

So Caitlin and Gemma, shout out to them for, I probably asked them to join their talent show thing.

And we just, we each had our little parts of debut.

We had a little dance to it for our song.

And yeah, I feel like I've just grown up with her music.

I've been in and out of the fold, certainly through like the Speak Now, Fearless Red era.
