Then Otto Warmbier happened.

Warmbier was the American student arrested in January 2016 for allegedly taking a propaganda poster from his hotel.

He was sentenced to 15 years hard labor, was released in a coma in June 2017, and died six days later.

I remember Warmbier.

This is Otto Warmbier, an American college student and tourist whose trip to North Korea turned into an actual nightmare.

In 2016, he was sentenced to 15 years-

Otto Warmbier was a twenty-one-year-old American college student from Ohio who traveled to North Korea in late two thousand and fifteen as part of a guided tour.

Warmbier joined a Young Pioneer Tours group, a China-based travel agency advertising trips to North Korea as safe and adventurous.

On New Year's Eve two thousand and fifteen, he and other tourists celebrated in Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung Square and later returned to their hotel, the Yanggakdo International Hotel.

On June twelfth, two thousand seventeen, US State Department Special Envoy Joseph Yun flew to Pyongyang with a medical team to negotiate Warmbier's evacuation.

Yun was permitted a visit to the hospital, the first time any American had seen Otto in seventeen months, and he demanded Warmbier's immediate release, to which North Korea agreed.

On June thirteenth, two thousand seventeen, Otto Warmbier was flown out of North Korea.

He arrived in his home state of Ohio that evening, carried off the plane pale and unresponsive, with a feeding tube and breathing apparatus in place.

The great tiger only took 14 years to finish the meal.
