Orla O'DohertyGUEST
So that's often... wrongly associated with motivational interviewing it's actually they're conflated but they're quite separate and um the motivational interviewing guy whose name escapes me right now has kind of stated kind of categorically that they're not related and actually there's a lot of evidence out there to suggest that the stages of change model is not useful either for explaining someone's behavior or predicting it which is what a theory is for to explain or predict um what's going to happen um and it's just not very useful because it's kind of a i guess a bit of a truism in a sense you know that you will move through different stages of change so pre-contemplation contemplation maintenance and so on um But it's not always the case that they happen kind of separately, necessarily one and then a little while later another.

Orla O'DohertyGUEST
If you were to wait for someone to be contemplative, to have that quitting conversation with them, then you're going to be actually missing a lot of opportunities with patients who sometimes, often, will just wake up one morning and decide to quit.

Orla O'DohertyGUEST
So someone can be pre-contemplative and then immediately, for some other reason, just decide to quit to change their behavior.
