Ordo salutis

We talked about justification last week.

There's so many particular topics we could have hit on justification and even to go from that into adoption, but we're going to go right over, moving through the Ordo Salutis this week and talk about sanctification.

These two are often put together, rightfully so.

Calvin called at the duplex gracia, that is the double grace that we receive that belongs to us by virtue of our union with Christ, both the gift of justification and sanctification.

I think, and you correct me if I'm wrong, I'm reading this as all of this kind of momentum in Christ's teaching about the Spirit coming and about where this passage has been placed in the whole kind of grand arc.

And I think there's like all kinds of Ordo Salutis implications in here, but I love a good Ordo Salutis implication.

So it's possible...

This week on Doctrine Matters, we come to the granddaddy of them all, the doctrine of justification.

As we've been moving through soteriology and in particular the Ordo Salutis, This week, justification.

There's so much we can say.

Let's try to hit some of the key terms and concepts of this doctrine.

Let's turn to this week's Doctrine Matters.

We continue this week on Doctrine Matters with the Ordo Salutis, walking through this logical order of salvation, these different theological categories.

They don't all happen in a temporal sequence, but they do help us understand the various facets of this salvation diamond.

We talked last week about effectual calling, regeneration, irresistible grace, how God works monergistically by the one working, not in cooperation with us to cause us to be born again.

Christ accomplishes redemption in the Historia Salutis.

The Spirit applies that accomplished redemption in the Ordo Salutis.

The Spirit applies Christ and all that belongs to Him.

Christ and all of His benefits.

But here's the deal.

You open up the Reformed tool chest, right? Did you know there's actually more to the Reformed view than simply soteriology? But what Owen Strand and what, you know, they've looked at this tool chest, they found the salvation piece, the Ordo Salutis, and they've taken that one tool, it's called a hammer, and then they apply it to every single leg of the construction project of building a house.

So they will tell you, look to the Reformers for salvation, but don't look to them for political thought.

Now, in John's lesson today, he covered what's known as the Ordo Salutis, the order of salvation.

And the first step the sinner takes is this, to look at Christ lifted up on the cross.

And then part two of the book is a systematic explanation of the biblical teaching with regard to what happens when the power of Christ.

the meaning, the significance of his resurrection is applied to me, to an individual believer, by the Spirit of Christ.

And early in the text, he defends the idea of the ordo salutis.

In other words, he defends the idea that you can answer that question, what happens to me when I receive Christ, that you can answer that systematically.
