Bye.
Erika ElizabethHOST
54:14
That was Orange Juice and Breakfast Time, the B-side, to their Simply Thrilled Honey 7-inch on postcard circa 1980.
Erika ElizabethHOST
54:25
Before that was Famous Mammals from the Bay Area and a song called In Any Case from their brand new LP.
Erika ElizabethHOST
54:33
It was a pleasant modern fantasy.
Jon RichardsonHOST
48:40
so we'll have a track.
Jon RichardsonHOST
48:42
We've got a short trail and then we've got I Can't Help Myself by Orange Juice.
Jon RichardsonHOST
48:45
Let's see.
Jon RichardsonHOST
48:45
And then we'll
Matt FordeGUEST
48:47
find some means of slicing this pie.
Matt FordeGUEST
48:48
Let's get it on.
Jon RichardsonHOST
48:49
it's i can't help myself by orange juice fading into the distance uh rounding off uh jumper jerks generally accepted as a good fashion item so you're wrong in the studio and i i was told i look dashing in my shampoo um now i've got the pie i've got into it it smells incredible it smells
Matt FordeGUEST
49:07
good you know what my real fear was that people were going to smell it because i've been carrying that around in a shoebox for the last two days
Norman BlakeGUEST
16:15
So that was all happening when I, uh, was, uh, young.
Norman BlakeGUEST
16:19
And, uh, but in Glasgow, there was a label called Postcard Records that formed in 1980, and they had bands like Orange Juice, um, Aztec Camera, Josef K, uh, and The Go Between did a record on, on Postcard-
Matty CHOST
16:31
Oh, that's right
Norman BlakeGUEST
16:32
... which is really great.
Norman BlakeGUEST
16:34
But they were, that was a big influence.
Norman BlakeGUEST
16:35
And the, the band Orange Juice, uh, um, so Edwin Collins, the artist Edwin Collins, was in the band Orange Juice, and I, I really loved them, and I, I bought all of their early singles and went to see them.
Norman BlakeGUEST
16:45
And they had a kind of different take.
Norman BlakeGUEST
16:46
They were kind of, they were sort of post-punk, but they were, um, they were s- so they, they had an indie aesthetic, uh, but they also, they, so they, they liked, you know, the Mekons and The Gang of Four and all that kind of stuff, and the Buzzcocks.
Carl NewmanGUEST
9:47
They had lovely houses and different places, and yeah, there was a good scene, as you know.
Carl NewmanGUEST
9:53
I think what I loved as well was that the universities around, like Leicester, De Mont, I mean, I used to see people like John Martin there and Orange Juice and really good bands and things.
Carl NewmanGUEST
10:04
And Japan I saw twice at the De Montfort Hall.
Carl NewmanGUEST
10:07
But there was just great venues and a really great scene for the music, wasn't there? And it was very eclectic as well at that time, you know, with the different genres.
Norman BlakeGUEST
2:05
Um, ooh.
Norman BlakeGUEST
2:07
Well, I'm gonna say, um, because the first one that springs to mind would be Orange Juice.
Allan GlenHOST
2:11
Right.
Norman BlakeGUEST
2:12
They really got into the Postcard thing.
Norman BlakeGUEST
2:32
But, um, along came Postcard, this indie label from Glasgow.
Allan GlenHOST
2:36
Yeah.
Norman BlakeGUEST
2:36
A- and, uh, I bought those, uh, those records, and yeah, no, I really, uh, I saw Orange Juice a number of times, and I really got into them, so-
Allan GlenHOST
2:46
And was-
BrianGUEST
14:06
Like I mentioned with the Heaven and Hell in 1980 album.
BrianGUEST
14:11
you know you know i i grew up thinking that dio was like back status because that was the voice that i knew um so my lowest rated for this year i kind of have two but i this one was suggested to me in my thousand one albums it was it was you know sent to me by this app um which i i currently hate this app i had to stop it for a while because was either sending me techno music or late 70s generic rock that i just mentioned a minute ago i don't like so but it also sent me this album um which i didn't like at all um band is called orange juice and the album's called rip it up i have no idea i never heard of any of these things I never heard of Orange Juice.
BrianGUEST
15:08
I don't know why this is listed as one of the 1001 albums you must hear before you die.
BrianGUEST
15:14
I have no idea.
BrianGUEST
15:16
I'm sure Gavin's going to listen to this and he's going to tell me a whole great thing about Orange Juice.
BrianGUEST
15:22
I have no idea.
BrianGUEST
15:23
It was awful.

10 MINS LATER

BrianGUEST
25:26
Just by hearing the name, I thought they were something else.
Justin CurrieGUEST
2:33
The UK, I think possibly because of postcard records.
Justin CurrieGUEST
2:38
She put together a little fanzine and she kind of got in touch with the Orange Juice postcard people.
Justin CurrieGUEST
2:45
And then she heard one of her appeal sessions on the radio and wrote this lovely letter saying, I don't know if you've got management, but I'm a big fan and my theory is that managers should be fans too.
Justin CurrieGUEST
2:58
And we were so impressed with this letter, we phoned her up and then immediately hired her as our manager.
Paul TiagiGUEST
4:26
As Justin said, she was a kind of larger than larger than life character.
Paul TiagiGUEST
4:34
Brazen Californian.
Paul TiagiGUEST
4:37
who became very attracted to orange juice and postcard records and decided to come over here to the UK to bask in that culture.
Paul TiagiGUEST
4:52
She knew Edwin.
Dave SchneiderHOST
143:57
No, o-one more before that.
Dave SchneiderHOST
143:59
John Cale, Andalusia, and we started things off with Untitled Melody by Orange Juice.
Dave SchneiderHOST
144:06
Um, great band, uh, from Scotland.
Dave SchneiderHOST
144:08
And I'm, I'm glad my buddy Eric is driving in, in Groton, Connecticut.
Paul LesterHOST
8:54
I was, I was just delighted that in the, uh, the post-punk section by John Coleman, collecting post-punk, um, my beloved Postcard releases, Hove Interview, and they've got quite nice numbers next to them.
Paul LesterHOST
9:08
My Orange Juice's, my Joseph K-
Daryl EasleaHOST
9:10
Yeah
Paul LesterHOST
9:10
...
Daryl EasleaHOST
9:21
Well, you know, uh, it...
Daryl EasleaHOST
9:23
Yes, it is and it isn't.
Daryl EasleaHOST
9:24
I mean, it's fascinating how those prices, certainly that first Orange Juice single just keeps going up.
Paul LesterHOST
9:31
Mm.
Gavin MegawHOST
45:42
And it's a band called Walt Disco, a six-piece band from Glasgow who do a mix of sort of post-punk, New Romantic, electro pop-type stuff.
Gavin MegawHOST
45:51
So if you think Bowie mixed with Roxy Music, Orange Juice, and Franz Ferdinand, that's the sort of feel of it, and it's brilliant.
Gavin MegawHOST
45:59
And I love finding new music.
Gavin MegawHOST
46:01
It's probably not new for many people out there, but it was certainly new for me, and I just loved it.
