Orange Goblin

So you said Atomic Bitchwax.

I immediately thought of Orange Goblin, which is another stoner rock band that I found right around the same time.

They weren't on my list, but when you said that name, I was like, oh, yeah, in my head, those two bands go together.

So If We Must, Dozer.

Yeah.

Hints of Orange Goblin, a little bit of Mastodon.

Yeah,

for sure.

But then also managing tours, I think, for a few people as well.

Yeah, I think he was Orange Goblin's... tour manager yes yeah he went on tour with them so yeah Alistair knows a lot has seen a lot and I know this is a bit of a mammoth episode but there's a lot of history there which was just so fascinating like bands as well he brought up didn't know existed went and checked out and yeah so yeah there's so much in this an awful lot An awful lot.

So if you have the patience, it's definitely worth it.

Okay, so with Evil Knievel, we do the demo.

We start playing gigs, getting quite a good name for us.

And then we get a really good gig, which is supporting Orange Goblin and Nebula at the Underworld.

Oh, wow.

It's mental.

yeah that's you know nine times out of ten it's not the band's choice it's the venue to you know doing those huge overheads that's why you see i think it was orange goblin did a show in london this is fucking years ago and they were playing and i think it was hammersmith the apollo or the whatever it was and they refused to meet the demands with the fucking i don't know if it was live nation whoever it was actually the sponsor but they were the ones involved saying you've got to pay x in commissions on your merch and they were like well we don't we'll not sell merch because our fans aren't going to pay 40 quid for a t-shirt so they went across the road to a pub and set up their merch shop in the pub across the street awesome said during the show if you want to buy a t-shirt go across you know the flag and hound across the road and that's where our merch is gonna be and they all went there afterwards and hung out with the fans and did a You know, they sold more T-shirts that way than they would have done if they were doing it through the venue doors and them taking a shit cut.

I don't believe in venues taking cuts from merch.

I think it's bullshit.

But when it comes to merch, leave the bands alone.

Let the bands do their own merch.

But the Orange Goblin example tells me that you can barter in any situation.

There are ways you can get around things.

Yeah.

So it was like that era of like orange goblin and cathedral electric wizard.

And we were like getting like cover mount CDs back in the day and like having one track and then, you know, having to work backwards from there and like hearing what they were talking about and yes they were talking about trouble and vitus and candle mats and things

and

and you know you know actually what inspired me perhaps even more than seeing women in bands, because there were probably fewer when I was growing up.

It was seeing like DIY bands.

I've said this a few times before, but it was like going to the garage in London and seeing Orange Goblin playing and being like, oh, this is like, this is like a small show.

This isn't a stadium show.
