This video walks through the founding of the Friends of Israel, the petition that doomed it, the actual text of the decree that suppressed it, and what that decree tells us about what the Catholic Church taught about the Jewish people in the late pre-conciliar period.

The organization's full name was the Opus Sacerdotale Amici Israel, the Priestly Work of the Friends of Israel.

It was founded in Rome on the twenty-fourth of February, nineteen twenty-six, by three Dutch Catholics, Father Anton von A. Soldonk, a canon of the Holy Cross, who became the association's secretary general, Father Latus Himmelrijk, a Franciscan, and a Jewish convert named Francisca von Leer, whom Father Himmelrijk himself had baptized.

Von Leer was, by every account, the movement's true animating spirit, though since the association only formally admitted clergy, she herself was never counted as a member of the very organization she had inspired.

Not at variance with charity, not at variance with pastoral prudence, at variance with the sense of the Church, the mind of the Fathers, and the sacred liturgy, three separate authorities invoked together all pointing the same direction.

And then the verdict stated as plainly as a document of this kind ever states anything.

The association Amici Israel must be abolished and declared it abolished in fact, and they ordain that in the future no one shall venture to write or publish books or booklets that in any way whatsoever promote erroneous initiatives of this sort.

No committee to study the matter further.
