And the... server that it uses by default is the OpenStreetMap server and that is one of the like stipulations basically that they put on that server making it free for everyone to use and making it so you don't need an API key is there are a few stipulations one of them is caching your tiles so that you're like reducing the amount of load right if you continually load the same tiles again and again you load them from the cache then you lessen the load on their server, which is good netizenship.
