Welcome to the first episode of season 6 of the Fuji podcast.

Today we're talking about Java 27, released on September 15th, 2026, right on schedule with Java's 6-month cadence.

So what people will do is that, to give you the background, Oracle decided that they would make certain versions, long-term support release ones, so they would have extended support and maintenance versions.

That was because shifting to the six months release cadence meant that it was impractical to offer extended updates for all versions.

So what we've seen is that Oracle started this, all of the other distributions of OpenJDK, so Azul's Zulu distribution, Coreto, Temarin, and so on.

have all aligned along the same thing.

giving internal presentations and at some point i basically deviated into what's now called developer advocacy outbound product marketing whatever you like stamp on it but the intrinsic desire to share knowledge so now i'm an o'reilly author been credited as a java champion so like all this basically came because i i wanted to share knowledge so And I still do development as of today.

With my limited experiences as a software developer lately, I can fix.

I can't believe, but we'll end up having Java 26 enhanced very soonish.

When I started with Java, it was more around 1.2, 1.3 kind of releases, so very early releases.

That basically means all of Java has been in the open source, OpenJDK.

Since forever, right? So in every single model, you'll find the basics of Java.

First, a quick warning for customer hosted Looker instances.

OpenJDK 11 will no longer be supported as of January 14th, 2027.

You must upgrade to OpenJDK 21.

Also, the Legacy Looker mobile app has been discontinued and removed from the app stores.

My name is Nikolaj Paloch and this episode of Ask the Architects is a conversation with Joe Darcy, leader of OpenJDK's compatibility and specification review group and, important for our conversation, committer to Project Valhalla.

As part of that work, Joe is expanding Java support for custom numerical types, which goes beyond value types.

Side note, the value types preview was merged into the JDK's main line and is available in the JDK 28's current early access builds.

... relying on some organization being charitable enough to contribute their, uh, bug fixes, uh, down to the, down to the main line.

But I think as far as OpenJDK, the, the group works, they really just focus on one release at a time.

So I think it was-

... because, uh, quite a lot of the issues that we faced were actually caused by, uh, a certain dependency which is not that well-maintained, in the sense that that dependency doesn't really follow the so-called tip and tail model that-

... that has been recommended by the OpenJDK team.

And we actually realized that, you know, there are some of these dependencies that we need to move away from.

OK, so do update hyphen alternatives space dash dash list space Java.

And it lists all the versions of OpenJDK that installed this version 8, 21, 17 and 11.

And sometimes I'm doing Cordova stuff or targeting a certain.

version and it has to be one java version and sometimes doing something else it needs to be another java version this is actually where the sandboxing script could be useful because then you can just run what you're working on within the sandbox and it just makes it so your developer tools on the path for that sandbox are just contained within that sandbox there's also junk like gradle which helps with these Cordova builds.
