It is a profound Christian film.
E

The Best Picture Show - On The Waterfront
Q
1:00QuintonHOST
I think I do.
Q
1:02QuintonHOST
So here we are talking about the 27th best picture on the waterfront and all things Academy Awards for 1955.
Q
1:15QuintonHOST
Quite a year to discuss in regards to all the nominees and, of course, the hugely successful film On the Waterfront, tied for the most Oscars as of this moment for the 27th Oscar ceremony, currently tied with, of course...
Q
1:32QuintonHOST
the last week's best picture winner from here to eternity and the infamous gone with the wind so three huge films over the course of the last 27 years two of them back to back here big start to the 1950s yeah
S
1:48SushHOST
this really is a big year for the academy awards uh quentin we're we're looking at some huge films um especially with our winner on the waterfront um but the the four other nominees here um And a lot of these acting categories, I think, have some behemoth nominations and wins.
S
2:06SushHOST
So looking forward to getting into it here, talking about the 1955 Oscars and our Best Picture winner as well.
Q
2:15QuintonHOST
yeah a lot to get into and of course as we always do on this podcast we always start with the academy awards the oscar ceremony all things with the golden oscar trophy before we talk about the best picture winner itself in the second half and so i think the first half of this journey as we talk about the academy and the oscars itself is to me a huge takeaway looking at this five and watching all five of these movies as I did over the last week.
Q
3:20QuintonHOST
I actually think some of these are pretty noteworthy films that I recommend to people, but are these four nominees really defining this year of filmmaking and the 1950s of film as a whole? Are these great movies to be talking about as an Oscar Best Picture nominee here? But it's hard for me to complain about these being the nominees when at the end of the day we got the best winner of the entire year of film.
Show and Tell: Canned Heat by Mikey Donica

It's not going to work that way with strings.
M
15:53Mikey DonicaHOST
But yeah, I will say this opening and other parts of the piece are heavily inspired by Bernstein's On the Waterfront, which...
M
16:04Mikey DonicaHOST
i was i was nervous about doing this episode because i always feel like we we tend to you know we're very influenced by a lot of other composers and you know we have all these tricks and stuff we use but to like say them out loud it almost feels like i'm like taking away all the magic from the piece and i'm like i'm like yeah actually uh this was just uh bernstein did this first and i just kind of did it worse you know
G
16:32Grace HollowayHOST
oh no it's different
G
17:54Grace HollowayHOST
You know...
M
17:55Mikey DonicaHOST
I'm not a film composer, but I'm not particularly insulted.
M
17:58Mikey DonicaHOST
I mean, the ironic thing is you're kind of both on, you're kind of right on both fronts because on the waterfront suite, which is, that's the piece I'm talking about, was his suite for, but he composed the music for the film on the waterfront.
M
18:11Mikey DonicaHOST
So it is both Bernstein.
Fear
M
22:54Mike FiggisHOST
And then as I get older, I'm thinking, well, at some point I will die and I will not have completed some of these projects.
M
23:03Mike FiggisHOST
I want to talk a little bit, because it relates to this, I reread a book over the summer, which I read when it came out probably 30 years ago, and it is the autobiography of Elia Kazan, the famous director who did On the Waterfront and Discover Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller and one of the greatest theater directors and film directors in history.
M
23:33Mike FiggisHOST
And of course, he famously testified against some of his colleagues about communism and became very much a kind of pariah on the kind of left-wing scene.
M
23:45Mike FiggisHOST
And then he wrote this book, this very, very... brutally frank, brutally honest autobiography called A Life.
