The town, you see, sits on the al-Sadarat Highway, the direct route between the Khartoum region and El Abid.

As the Sudan War Monitor explains, the RSF held large sections of that road from the early months of the war, using it to move fighters and supplies between Kordofan and the outskirts of the capital's sister city, Omdurman, and to put pressure on El Abid.

Even after the army partially broke the siege of El Abade in May 2025, its convoys still had to take a much longer detour through White Nile State.

When the SAF captured the highway in July, that detour ended and the army could resupply and reinforce El Abade much faster than before.

Then the Mahdiist leader declared that Khartoum should be wiped out.

He destroyed all the houses and made the inhabitants come to his new capital, Omdurman, which he had laid out on the other side of the White Nile about five miles to the south.

When the people left they tore off the roofs and pulled out the doors of their houses and carried them along to use in their new houses at Omdurman.

After that for years and until Kirchner came, Khartoum was nothing but a brick pile and a dust heap.

Omdurman had swallowed up not only its whole population but that of a great part of the Sudan, for the Khalifa forced the tribes to come there to live in order that he might have their men ready for his army in times of war.

The result was that Omdurman had more than a half million inhabitants while Khartoum had none.

The RSF was pushed out of the capital, but then they moved into the strategy of taking over the west of Sudan.

Churchill's often emotional, and he recounts his becoming emotional.

Is that unusual among world leaders?
