It's, I think, at least from the 1800s, maybe over 100 years old.

And the reason why I know this is because Montgomery Clift plays the piano and sings different lyrics to Olivia de Havilland in the film The Heiress.

Robin Hood (1938) Review: A Timeless Tale of Heroism & Romance
S
1:25SimonHOST
Flynn's Robin Hood is not just a swashbuckling hero, he is a man of joy and charisma, embodying the spirit of adventure with every daring leap and sword fight.
S
1:35SimonHOST
His chemistry with Olivia de Havilland, who plays the lovely Maid Marian, is palpable.
S

De Havilland's Marion is not just a damsel in distress but a strong and intelligent woman who sees the goodness in Robin and aids him in his quest for justice.

Her-steria! Incendiary female performances in horror cinema

it is such a fascinating film because I think it's the one film on the list I hadn't seen before and I think I was really expecting again something more along the domestic terror lines because obviously this is one of the films that you could class as a psycho bitty film so we talked a little bit like in the last podcast about Norma Desmond Gloria Swanson's role in Sunset Boulevard and the idea that you have these women from the 20s 30s and 40s who in the 60s are now aging out of what Hollywood is considering acceptable to be on film.
G
18:49Georgia HumphreysHOST
But a lot of these like grand dams of cinema like Olivia de Havilland, Joan Crawford, Betty Davis, they are now finding new expression and they're having to sort of like stay on screen by playing these psychobitties.
G
19:02Georgia HumphreysHOST
So you've got films like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, which Olivia de Havilland is also in, in which it is sort of like an offspring of sort of like gothic excess but it is essentially about all these sort of like hagsploitation these women that are mad they're so like perfumed by cloying excess and that's kind of more what I was expecting but Lady in a Cage is such like a fascinating time in Hollywood because it's 1964 and obviously Olivia de Havilland is in Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte but the roles that she's like most famous for in Hollywood in her career are sort of like her roles with like errol flynn in sort of like these swashbucking romance movies she's also very famous i think for being in gone with the wind where she's playing like again a very kind of like cloying version of white goodness in like the antebellum south and this film really does engage with that like from the outset like from the minute the credits roll on this picture, it is a film about like convergence.
G

They're describing like this idea of like this urban jungle coming for this white woman.
