Older Americans Act of 1965

One more quick thing affecting our seniors.

The Older Americans Act has not been funded.

They have not increased funding.

And that's our Meals on Wheels program.

They can't shop independently.

This starts on the federal level, the Older Americans Act and nutrition programs, which kicked in in 1978.

We precede that.

We were created back in 1972.

We also are able to receive other funds that focus on rural initiatives and frontier initiatives in Nevada.

Good example of that is the Aging and Disability Services Division funding through the Older Americans Act.

And that funding is focused on serving those who are 60 and above in civil legal needs.

And as a result, we have that funding specifically for eight counties in Nevada, which is the majority of the rural and frontier communities in the northeastern part of the state.

Today we're talking about a part of the Older Americans Act that often doesn't receive the attention it deserves, but has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of older adults across the country.

And we're talking about the Senior Community Service Employment Program, better known as CSEP.

When most people think about the Older Americans Act, they think about meals, caregiving, transportation, or legal assistance.

Those services are essential, but the Act also recognizes something equally important for many older adults, the opportunity to work, which remains a pathway to independence, financial security, purpose, and social connection.

CSEP is the only federal employment and training program created specifically for older adults with low incomes.

Since becoming part of the Older Americans Act in 1978, it has helped people who are 55 and over build new skills, regain confidence after unemployment,
