The commanding officer of a US Marine unit that deployed to the Middle East has called Iranian forces very creative and innovative.

The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit based in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture assisted US operations against Iran from the region in March.

This included supporting a US blockade on vessels entering or departing Iranian ports.

The 31st MEU returned to Okinawa in July.

Bushido Formed from the two words bushi, meaning warrior, and do, meaning the way or path, describes a moral code of conduct encompassing frugality, loyalty to one's lord and the emperor, martial skill in battle and honor until death, that was used by those who we today refer to as samurai, although in Japan itself these legendary warriors are simply known as bushi.

[upbeat music] A newcomer has won the gubernatorial election in the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa.

Kojo Genta, who was backed by the ruling parties and even some opposition parties, defeated the incumbent, who was seeking a third term.

This year marks 54 years since Okinawa was returned to the mainland following 27 years of US occupation from 1945 to 1972.

About 70% of US military facilities in Japan are still concentrated in the prefecture.

In the last three elections, the relocation of US bases was the biggest point of contention, and candidates that opposed that were elected, but this time, unlike in the past, people's quality of life and the economy were a bigger priority.

During the election campaign, incumbent Tamaki Denny reiterated his opposition to the relocation of the Futenma air station within Okinawa.

He also called for free school lunches and free medical expenses for sick children.
