yeah yeah she was uh in a sense just she was a slave of one culture and then the next right um yeah i i do agree i think like the real standout moments are when they kind of portray the uh the spiritualism and beliefs of the different cultures i love this stuff with the uh Torgene's background and like the spirit world with Ogedei

I think all that is really where they're just like going in like 100% in this anime and some really spectacular visuals and stuff like that so yeah if nothing else I think it's really cool what they were able to do with the adaptation and kind of like digging into the uh the themes and the the the symbology and the visuals of the um like religious beliefs of the two cultures

And we actually see echoes of this mentality later in Mongol history.

When Ogedei died, when Mungu died, there were delays between the death itself and the formal public announcement.

There were periods where armies in the field kept campaigning under the legal fiction, that the reigning Khan had simply ordered them to continue, even though everyone at the top knew there was a power vacuum forming in Karakorum.

The gap between private knowledge at court and public proclamation was not an accident.

Genghis's second son, Chagatai, does not enter into the secret history until the 1206 Kharaltai, when he was already an adult.

A very strange oversight, especially considering that both Joche and Ogedei were mentioned as distinguished players in their father's early wars of steppe conquest.

It's posited that maybe something went wrong with his early education, or perhaps that his youthful temperament caused Temujin to keep him out of important affairs of state until he had grown up a bit.

The secret history is, as usual, silent on such possible inner motivations.

It would be this mutual loathing between Jocha and Chagatai, against which Genghis had long preached that, as brothers of the same womb, they were the only people on whom they could ever truly rely, and certainly should never be one another's enemies.

Yet when his exhortations fell on Chagatai's deaf ears, the Great Khan eventually realized that leaving his empire in the hands of either of them as his successor would virtually guarantee all-out war between both.

That brings us to the third son of the Khan, Ogedei.

As of the 1220 succession meeting, he was about 34 years old.

The thing about the White Scars is even when the White Scars, air quotes here, "win a major campaign" as in one of their main generals is part of it, they are rarely the only force there.

Whereas with Space Wolves, obviously Ultramarines, Black Templar obviously, but even some of the other ones, they can often be the main, the, the main player, and it's them plus some guard.

And then there was the fourth, the Yuan dynasty, which was ruled by Kublai Khan's descendants, a child from the youngest son of Temujin and Borta, Tolui, and he maintained his Mongolian shamanistic customs but adopted Tibetan Buddhism as an official religion, granting tax exemptions to Christians, Muslims, and all other religions within his khanate.

The House of Ogadai was the only one of the four sons of Temujin and Borta not to rule over its own empire.

Their presence would be used for influence in many power plays during the collapse of these khanates.

Here's a fun fact for you.

Ogadai actually got to serve as the Great Khan of the whole empire.

By the end of this episode, the world created by Genghis Khan will meet its climax and give way to the modern world where the next people to move in will bring cannons and guns and finally put an end to the era of khans and khanates.

This is why they often called Timur the last great steppe conqueror.

I just want to ask, do you think, was there any substance to it? Or was it kind of like, you know, maybe Chagata and Ogadai wanting to just discredit Jochi so that it furthers their ambition to succeed the Genghis?

There was obviously something there, all right? If they were not able to, obviously within the imperial family, present this in such a way that there was no doubt so i what i kind of suspect either even the original people involved so temujin borte themselves either they genuinely had no idea or the actual truth was it was really obvious he wasn't and the best they could do with this was this obfuscation i to me this being entirely a creation of jochi's enemies seems extraordinarily unlikely because I don't believe from the data we have that they would make up a story that would impugn on Chinggis and Borte's honor.

And if it was a fabrication, we would have it in a lot more sources.

And that Jochi is like his most trusted son, being given a lot of responsibility.

But after 1223, he gets excluded from the succession due to the conflict chiefly between him and his brother Chagatai.

Now on this tree we have on screen, Ogadai is shown in between Jochi and Chagatai.

Well, Chagatai was the next oldest brother.
