Octopus's Garden

It is one of the biggest albums in pop culture history.

Side 1 had Come Together, Something, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Oh Darling, Octopus's Garden, I Want You, She's So Heavy.

Side 2, the medley with Here Comes the Sun, Because, You Never Give Me Your Money, Sun King, Mean Mr. Mustard, Polythene Pam, She Came In Through the Bathroom Window, Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight, The End, and Her Majesty.

It has some of the most recognizable melodies of all time, of course, would come together.

Something, Here Comes the Sun, Octopus's Garden.

It's just, it's a classic.

What can you say? And the critics agree because it was finally recognized in 1970 at the Grammy Awards.

So I go to watch it and it's Ringo showing up.

and being like, I thought of the song last night and he's playing Octopus's Garden on the piano and he's got the lyrics.

And then George Harrison walks over and goes, how about right here? You do this and he's doing a little guitar to it.

And then you expand that out.

Obviously, McCartney has lots of other better songs, including some of the ones that ended up on Let It Be, like Let It Be, for example.

And then we get a Ringo song, Octopus's Garden, only Ringo's second song.

And McDonald describes this one as kind of a poor man's yellow submarine, but I really like it a lot better than Yellow Submarine.

I think there's some really great vocal harmonies in there.

And George Harrison, who is easily one of the guitarists ever.

That opening to Octopus's Garden, he ate there.

All three of them, prodigies.

And then there's just Ringo who enjoys drums.

also a lot of work, though, isn't it, to write out Yellow Submarine? I'm the walrus.

Uh, I never took Pete Best, from w- what little we know of him and have seen interviews, as quite the personality of Ringo, and Ringo did bring more than just being a drummer and a timekeeper to The Beatles.

He was a personality and, of course, he sang, you know, Octopus's Garden and Rock, oh, wh- I can't remember some of the other...

Yellow Submarine

I think that, uh, uh, if you put any drummer into The Beatles, The Beatles were more so McCartney, Lennon, and R- I mean, the, the quiet one, George, George Harrison to me was underrated, uh, for so long.

It was really those three guys, so I th- I don't think it changes the band incredibly much, but it does change them, obviously.

It's a differ- So, I still think they put out the albums they put out, uh, just without, uh, Octopus's Garden and Yellow Submarine-

And George Martin, and George Martin was, was brilliant.

And, um, it's been interesting to like have conversations where I remember we, we had this, uh, this band, the bets on a couple of years ago.

Um, and we talked about octopus's garden.

And I want to say this was at like, I don't know, one 85, somewhere way high up in the rankings.

But when we were done, um, I remember thinking, like, oh, my God, I've misunderstood this song.

I hear you.

With the people you've spoken to on the pod, just as a curiosity, do you have a – and I'm sure everyone's a favorite for different reasons – have you had a an aha moment with someone on a particular track that's kind of stuck out to you went oh this this is an interesting take when you've set up as someone else and been speaking about a particular piece

yeah um well as mentioned earlier uh this band the beth and they we talked about um octopus's garden with them and they presented this really brilliant argument about how that song gives such a great insight into kind of the psyche of Ringo Starr and just the want for being surrounded by love and comfort and inclusion and friends and family and how that's really always been kind of his M.O., He just wants to be a part of it.

He wants to be surrounded by the people that he loves, wants to work for them, support them, play with them.
