Ocoee

And two of these cities in Florida were actually burned down.

So the first one starts in November 1920 in Ocoee.

This is near Orlando.

Pretty much white mob comes through on a week-long rampage.

So about a month later, her grandson came in.

And he lived out in Ocoee.

And I asked her about it.

I said, look, can you tell me, you know, I asked him.

You can't find it anywhere.

And then it got weirder because he was right handed.

So what had happened is he had walked down the stairs of his house in Ocoee.

He tripped on the stairs.

Being originally from New York, my family just grew up eating delicious New York bagels.

And then when I stumbled upon Jeff's in Ocoee, it was just kind of like, it was a meant to be kind of thing.

But yeah, been in the restaurant world for about 30 years.

It does kind of show my age a little bit.

That's awesome.

Yeah.

So your first experience with Jeff's was Ocoee?

Absolutely.

50 years later, and not much had changed.

In Ocoee, Florida, after a conflict occurred outside the house of a Black man who was trying to register voters, a white mob burned down dozens of Black homes and churches while killing as many as 80 Black Americans.

I mean, in 1955, a Black World War I veteran named Lamar Smith was shot in broad daylight while trying to help Black community members vote in Mississippi.

For almost 100 years, Black Americans knew that casting their vote, if they were able to pass all the logistical hurdles along the way, was literally putting their life on the line for American democracy.

Well, I have, well, okay, before we move on to the next one, this just makes me think of an interesting question around sort of your experience because we've talked about this a little bit before on the show about just your involvement with the community around your original store in Ocoee and you see customers that, you'll be in Vegas and see somebody that was at the farmer's market with you.

So I imagine, that journey although very rewarding feels very personal these are all people that you know it's your jeff's extended circle as a human as a person showing up every day but it must be something completely different to think about jeff's what we're building and then getting this level the same level that you got with a coey but from people that you've not even spoken to you're just hearing it as they interact with Jeff's, which is larger than just sort of, you know, and I imagine that must be an interesting sort of switch for you where it's like, okay, I'm a person making relationships versus this thing I've built is impacting people.

That has to be a jump for you, even though it's really the same thing for you to get that arm's length distance must be a difference.

Maybe it's the scale that shocks me.

You know, you're right.

We had a great group of folks in our early days from home and then into the Ocoee shop.

But there's just, I don't know, there's just something really powerful to know that these experiences are happening beyond that and that other people are creating those experiences and those moments for their community.

It is district only, and I'm running for District 2, which is the entire northwest area of Orange County.

So it includes all of Ocoee, all of Apopka, Zellwood, Tangerine, uh lockhart uh a little bit of clericona i lost a little bit of clericona to the new district seven but so that kind of that whole kiva the whole um northwest peninsula that pokes out on the top on top left side of the orange kind of orange county and you do have to live in the district to vote for me and uh whether you live in the city or the county you are allowed to vote for a county commissioner

And I guess it dips then actually into a little bit of Maitland because Mike lives in Maitland and you were on his ballot.

Yeah, you were on my ballot.

As for the kids, police were able to return their prized VR headset.
