Ochaco Uraraka

Not a lot of little kids at this one.

Um, but Sophie and I cosplayed, and Sophie let, went last year as Ochaco from My Hero Academia.

This year she went as Mabel from Gravity Falls, and I cosplayed with her as well.

I was Grunkle Stan.

Which is ...

A- a- and you know, and, and I think you make a great point.

It's just like there was a very positive atmosphere, and I think that's one thing I've always taken away from it, like, like last year when Sophie was Ochaco, just like the amount of great feedback she got, just people being nice to her.

Be- the same thing with me first ti- and her this year.

Uh, we meet really quickly Ojiro.

Jiro's there, Midoriya, Ochaco.

I think Sero is with them as well.

Um, and they're all on the scene.

... um, because of the state of the country.

So, I mean, we got that going for us.

But the, the, the, the saddest thing about this entire scene really is, um, we've got this team, um, comprised of Deku, Ojiro, Ochaco, Sero, and Hagakure.

I think that's everybody on this team.

Yeah.

We all know it's Toga and O- Uh, Ochaco.

[laughs]

Yeah.

Oh, yeah.

Um, and it was the fight between Uraraka and Bakugo-

Yes

... because at that point, I was like, Bakugo?

Yep, yep.

Oh.

And I just had so much more respect for, for Uraraka.

Yeah.

Uh, Colbert compares her to two very specific polar opposite characters from My Hero Academia to illustrate this inversion of the smile.

Uh, he brings up Toga Himiko and Uraraka Ochaco.

I want to break those two down for the listener because they represent two massive extremes in Horikoshi's previous work, and synthesizing them is kind of mind-blowing.

Let's start with the darker extreme.

But as the series progressed over a decade, Horikoshi revealed that this horrific grimace was actually hiding a profound, desperate sadness.

It took nearly the entire run of the series for the heroes to unpack that trauma.

And the specific hero who unpacked it was her rival, Uraraka Ochaco, who's basically the polar opposite of a yandere.

She is a quintessential hero, and she is entirely defined by this beaming, radiant, genuinely warm smile.

Yeah, they perform and everything.

You know, there was a weird mo- not weird, but like Froppy's throwing Ochaco around and she's touching everyone and they just start floating.

Mm.

And I don't remember what, how her quirk works.

We- we're going back." And maybe he could announce a big sequel manga that he's gonna put in Jump+ or something like that.

But yeah, I- I'm putting the chips on, this is going to be a movie, time skip movie, and maybe it'll answer some more questions, Deku's father, whatever became of Deku and Uraraka's relationship.

But yeah, that, that's right there, probably that's the wild card of everything we've talked about thus far, and we've talked about a lot.

That is the one that is, like, the biggest question mark on, are they just gonna play everybody, and just like, "Hey, celebration, My Hero, woo-hoo!" [laughs] And everybody's gonna be like, "Are you kidding me? You brought us out here for this nonsense?" And also, this is a lot of series now that I'm looking at it.
