Now, what about your personal carbon footprint? So according to Oceanology guest and climate scientist Dr.

Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, your personal ability to reduce carbon emissions is very tiny compared to what fossil fuels and agriculture industries could be doing on a grand scale if they were legally required to act in the interest of humanity instead of the interest of profits.

But another change since 2006 is technology.

And so I guess very simply, I thought this was an important episode to make.

These are nine people who love the ocean, who have built lives and careers around trying to understand it, and who have something to say about what it means to find your place within that work.

Hello, my name's Erin Jones.

Now, Dr. Lindley's voice is one you may recognize, not only if you've listened to his show, The Deep Sea Podcast, but he is also a repeat guest in the Pine Forest Media universe.

On our sister podcast, Oceanography, we recorded an episode called, What is the Deep Sea Even Like? But this time, we are staying mostly within the museum to learn about what being a curator of fishes actually means.

We'll learn what happens behind the scenes of a natural history museum, how scientists go about checking out a shark from a meat library, and how curators like Dr. Lindley decide what to preserve for researchers working in 100 years from now, and how new technologies are allowing us to ask entirely new questions of species that lived 100 years ago.

All right, one last thing before we get started.

Today, I'm joined by Aisha, who's a marine scientist, skipper, scuba diver, and all-round ocean woman.

She studied a Bachelor of Marine Science in Sydney with a particular interest in apex predators.

She then interned with DPI Fisheries, where she worked on research into bull sharks' behaviour, but her career just hasn't been in the science world.

She started working on boats in Sydney Harbour and then made the move up to Hamilton Island, which is actually where we met.

And since then, she's worked her way up into the Master 5 and MET 2 licences, which as another woman working in boats is absolutely massive and so inspirational.

So I'm very excited to have a chat with her today.

Today we're going to talk about sharks, marine science, scuba diving, boats, being a woman in the field, and just what happens when your love for the ocean becomes your entire career.

So let's dive in.

And more recently, the three of us together, we got funding from the National Science Foundation that supported our journey to Antarctica, as well as all the further experiments that we are going to be doing for the next couple of years.
