Hello again everybody and welcome to episode 12 of Limited Principles, your weekly guide to pack one, pick one, build arounds in the limited format and also to the staple cards of limited, the cards that appear regularly in every set or just about every set as kind of the staple commons, the backbone cards of each limited set.

And today we're going to have a staples episode talking about Oblivion Ring.

the white exiling enchantment which is has a spoiled version in the upcoming reality fracture set called memory trap so we'll look at the history of oblivion ring how it has developed in magic particularly how it's played better and worse in different recent formats that are still in standard and then how we expect memory trap to play in the upcoming set and in the hobbit the most recent set we did not have a true oblivion ring variant because i'm looking at the commons that are going to be available you know you'll see them in just about every draft we did have an oblivion ring effect it just occurred at uncommon on the card celebrate the mountain king the three and a white enchantment that had the oblivion ring effect of when it enters exile up to one target non-land permanent your opponent controls until the enchantment leaves the battlefield and then Celebrate the Mountain King had the additional benefit of when it enters Recruit.

So you might hear a more experienced Magic player or a Magic player that's been playing for a long time say, oh, Celebrate the Mountain King is just O-Ring for plus one mana with Recruit.

Because the base Oblivion Ring effect is, at least in Modern Limited now, a three-mana common enchantment that exiles a permanent while it's on board.

The Hobbit version was notably an uncommon.

It was a very powerful card.

If it wasn't the best uncommon in the set, best performing, it is one of the best performing.

They're fine, but I'm really hoping to shore up my interaction with whatever that second color is.

And while I don't think white is great, the Magnificent End and really the, the juice is Celebrate the Mountain King, that's the recruiting Oblivion Ring card.

Those are the removal spells I'm hoping to have in my blue decks because they're single pipped, and the removal from blue isn't great in my opinion.

Well, and Magnificent End at two mana is also a very scary card to play against out of red/black.

One, and recruit is not optional.

So, like, you're just like, "Oh, oops, I have to...

If I wanna..." Like, I've had spo- [laughs] I've definitely had spots where I've had, whatever, Celebrate the Mountain King, the Oblivion Ring removal, and I'm like, "I don't know if I can cast this 'cause I have-"
