Oatman

And this one is going to be on wild burros.

But before we get to the wild burros, we're going to tell a little story, which in the early 1850s, The Oatman family was attacked by, I believe it's pronounced Havapai Indians.

This was in 1851, and the family was completely slaughtered.

Seven or eight members of the family were killed.

Olive Oatman was the only survivor.

She was taken prisoner.

She was captured.

In 1863, we fast forward a few years, gold was discovered in the Black Mountains.

We went to Lake Havasu.

They're like, we're going to go to Oatman today.

Oatman, Arizona, you know, it's off of Route 66.

And I'm like, okay, well, that'll be fun.

And I'm like, what's in Oatman? They're like, well, they have an old Western show and we have a little secret for you.

We can't wait.

And, you know, I'm like, you know, the cowboy show might be a little, I might be a little old for, but I'll go to that.

And I think you did that too.

following Route 66 a bit.

We ended up in Oatman, Arizona.

I don't know if you're aware of Oatman.

It goes into the mountains of Arizona.

It was a little mining town that was on the route.

I'll have to send you a picture.

She's got a wall, and there's probably 100 bottles on this wall that she's found out here that are fully intact, out in Oatman and Kingman area, North Kingman.

Just incredible.

Out here, even around her house that she's found, there's the old dump just east or just south of us here that we found out there, an old glass bottle dump from back in the day.

So we'll go through, like...

There's, like, a really windy mountain kind of road that goes to Oatman, which has burros, l- wild burros that you can feed carrots to.

And then we will also, Route 66 goes right through Petrified Forest National Park, so that will be a new national park for all of us.

And then the last state is California.

My, two of my kids actually work for the historical society in our little town, and we have a historical home here, so it's like, oh, this is their, like, their job.

Yeah.

And then we did the drive that I was most looking forward to, which was the mountain pass into Oatman.

It's called Sitgreaves Pass.

Like, you can't do that.

Like, but, you know, when we got where you cross out of California between Needles and then to Oatman and Kingsland, I mean, there's a huge climb there.

It is really, and it was so hot.

And Oatman is a gold mining town-

I also reared a number of queens.

Those colonies that did the best had queens bred from a colony that I procured from Mr. Oatman." The queens are very prolific, and the workers great foragers, being fully up to the reputation given them by Mr.

Hedden.
