Nusach Ashkenaz

So let's start off with Ashkenazi prayer rite.

Ashkenazi was actually a good place to start because it was actually the Nusach of Eretz Yisrael.

A lot of people don't realize that.

It's called Ashkenaz Germany, but the rite that was used in Palestine, in old Eretz Yisrael, was later known as Nusach Ashkenaz.

So it says there, As you all know, For the informers may there be no hope.

And may all wickedness instantly perish.

And may the arrogant ones, may they be uprooted, crushed, destroyed and subdued quickly, speedily and in our days.

Okay, so that is a typical version of this prayer.

That was one thing Rav Soloveitchik said is not really right.

Then in the Sefer Ha'avoda, years ago, at the time Rab Yehosef Karo wrote his Beit Yosef, the two versions of the Sefer Ha'avoda, Nusach Ashkenaz, Nusach Sfarad.

So we spoke about the two differences on different occasions.

So the-- They were both full of mistakes, and the Nusach Sfarad had more mistakes than Nusach Ashkenaz.

But the Beit Yosef has a whole page.

In my tour, it's on Omed Beis.

He corrects all the mistakes.

And the printers were smart enough to correct all the mistakes in the machzor based on the Beit Yosef.

Even the Hasidim are Bnei Ashkenaz.

And he says, before the Hasidic movement came around, they were all davening Nusach Ashkenaz.

But then the Hasidic Sharet has started changing the Nusachos, So he says, When you switch from Nusruch Sefer to Nusruch Ashkenaz, that's not a Shinri Minag, that's going back to your roots.

Even though in the past few generations in your family they've been davening spart.

So here I'm gonna put the, the, the, the question to you.

We say every day in Nusach Sfarad, Arizal, in Tachanun we say, "Hashem, Hashem kel rachum vechanun." And in Nusach Ashkenaz, they don't do it every day, but it comes, it comes, uh, Slichos.

And I perhaps said before, the focal point of Slichos i- the focal point of Slichos is Yud Gimmel Tzerach.

Now, it comes on a fast day, so it works like this.

This is very relevant.

It comes to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

We have in Nusach Ashkenaz, it starts, "Bechein Teim Pachtacha, Bechein Teim Kovod, Bechein Tzadikim".

In Nusach Sefard, Arizal, Bechein-- It starts Bechein, uh...

At the same time.

Now, Tekiahs is it's Nusach Ashkenaz or it's-

Nusach, Nusach Ashkenaz.

Great.

They're in the repetition of the Shemoneh Esreh.

My question about this is the following.

In Nusach Ashkenaz, there are more daven Nusach Ashkenaz, obviously.

So Nusach Ashkenaz, on a daily basis, it's Asher HaVoletziin, Asher HaMotzeach HaVoletziin, and then straight to Aleinu.

is an optional extra.

And Peter MacTorres is not said on a daily basis, only on Shabbos.

And for that reason, Ashkenaz do not say it every day, because people rush to work and they might get it wrong.

But according to Nusach Sfard and Nusach Arizal, where these things, both Shish Yoyim and Keturah, are said every day before Oleinu, then I don't see the reason why they are relegated to Mincha when they're part of Seydei Yoim.

In other words, I'm saying that the Minach of not saying the Mashacharis seems to be rooted in Minach Ashkenaz, in Nusach Ashkenaz, and therefore the question why Nusach Sephard, or why are they delayed to Mincha, I don't have an answer to that.
