All right.
Anderson CowanHOST
101:56
And number three for me is a documentary called Nuisance Bear.
Anderson CowanHOST
102:00
This could be heartbreaking.
Anderson CowanHOST
102:01
I hope it's not, but it's called Nuisance Bear.
Anderson CowanHOST
102:03
It comes out December 4th.
Anderson CowanHOST
102:05
One of the two directors, a lot of these movies are double directed to co-directed.
Anderson CowanHOST
102:21
Maybe he picked up some things from Matt, but this feels like a straightforward story about a polar bear.
Anderson CowanHOST
102:26
It's a polar bear's traditional migration.
LaraHOST
23:47
There's a lot of documentaries for obvious reasons, but there's some narratives.
LaraHOST
23:50
But the opening night film was called Nuisance Bear.
LaraHOST
23:53
And this is what I'm going to talk about.
LaraHOST
23:55
The directors are Gabriella Osio-Vanden and Jack Weissman, and they are Toronto directors.
LaraHOST
24:51
Um, and it was so interesting reading about it because Werner Herzog wrote to them himself.
LaraHOST
24:59
Like they, the, the guy, Jack Wiseman, he shared this on Instagram.
LaraHOST
25:04
Um, and he wrote a letter back that was saying how they were so inspired by Grizzly Man to make Nuisance Bear and how that was a really interesting, um, like sort of overlap, um, and how foundational that film was to the films that they make now and so I'm like wow I wish that I saw this like you know a month and a half ago so that I could have discussed it in the context of Grizzly Man but obviously we're still doing docs so it's still relevant but basically it is about polar bears in the north and it sort of focuses on two communities in Churchill Manitoba which is the polar bear capital of the world and Oh, what is the other city called? A further north Inuit community that I don't remember the name of, so I will look that up now.
LaraHOST
26:02
But we see the really the two polar reactions, polar reactions to the polar bears, because in Churchill, the... people there have made an entire industry out of it people come from all over the world to see these polar bears and you really get to see how it's become almost like like a zoo or safari like the scale of the industry is unbelievable and they shared some really interesting anecdotes about um when the filmmakers were going to churchill and were like filming the situation and then they turned their cameras on the people who were filming the polar bears and it's just like it's it's dozens if not hundreds of people with their cameras taking pictures of polar bears um and they're they're just like filming the situation the people being filmed are like no, the polar bears are over there.
Logan ThompsonHOST
32:50
Yeah.
Logan ThompsonHOST
32:52
My 17 is Nuisance Bear.
Dylan LongHOST
32:54
All right.
Dylan LongHOST
32:54
16, I have Project Hail Mary.
Joe AragonHOST
20:43
Any guesses?
Claira CurtisHOST
20:46
Probably not Nuisance Bear yet, because that comes out in November.
Joe AragonHOST
20:51
Yeah, Nuisance Bear is.
Joe AragonHOST
20:52
It's on the 10, but the drop-off after...
Joe AragonHOST
20:56
No, the drop off after five is huge.
Brian WishartHOST
43:44
But like I felt kind of like there's a lot of stonewalling, which I find to be irritating in movies.
Brian WishartHOST
43:50
for being an 83 minute long movie it zips by everyone else i talked to at the festival who saw it absolutely loved it they thought it was like a brilliant brilliant movie and it's a movie where the filmmakers you're excited to see what they do next because like there's some definite talent there so yeah the peril at pincer point i hope it gets a wider release somewhere it's a movie that played at a south by southwest so uh hopefully it pops up somewhere wider soon at another movie i liked was called nuisance bear which is a documentary that follows a polar bear as he goes north from manitoba none of it and how all the wildlife officers and tourists kind of interact with nature and polar bears and stuff and how like they're trying to keep communities safe while trying to respect nature and as it goes further north the dangerous bear runs into because indigenous cultures up north hunt polar bears as part of their culture so um that bears are gonna be a lot more danger.
Brian WishartHOST
44:46
So the fascinating thing about this movie is it's a documentary and you feel for this bear, but all at the same time, you are looking at real people who are close to these bears and in these communities that are in danger because of polar bears getting too close to them.
Brian WishartHOST
45:02
So what's fascinating about this movie is it actually creates a great narrative Out of something that it doesn't feel manufactured.
Brian WishartHOST
45:29
Like I don't know how they're how they pull off a lot of these shots.
Brian WishartHOST
45:33
This one is going to be released by A24, so it's going to get a wider release for sure.

Tom O'BrienGUEST
56:15
Um, there's this, another Sundance doc called "Nuisance Bear" about the encroachment of bears, uh, in, in, uh, the Arctic, in Atla- Alaska, that goes into, that as their, as their habitat is getting pushed out, they're being pushed into towns.
Tom O'BrienGUEST
