Nuclear winter

Start with seaweed.

It does not need farmland, and some nuclear winter models suggest that stronger ocean mixing could bring more nutrients toward the surface.

So while agriculture on land gets harder, certain seaweed growing conditions could actually improve.

Then there are microorganisms.

Yeah, Louis Alvarez.

And that goes to the origin of the nuclear winter theory.

So I was... studying, working in New Zealand and working on my postdoc in New Zealand.

And Lewis's son, Walter, had been working in layers of fossils below me.

And Lewis and his son were finding the iridium anomaly around the world, what led to the whole story of the asteroid and the dinosaur.

And out of that, in correspondence with people like Carl Sagan, And Arthur Clarke, it came to this idea of the nuclear winter, which, in fact, Sagan introduced, I believe it was in 83 or 84 in the panel that they had at the end of the airing of the movie the day after.

And it was Sagan who introduced to the world Alarez nuclear winter theory.

That is that.

I've tried to explain the danger of these firestorms.

And eventually, if you have enough of them, they can cause what they call nuclear winter.

I'll talk about that in a minute.

The Russians have the Poseidon nuclear drone torpedo now, and it can have up to 100 megaton.

Firestorms engulf many cities, where storm-level winds fan the flames, igniting anything that can burn, melting glass and some metals, and turning asphalt into flammable hot liquid.

But the explosions, the electromagnetic pulse, and the radioactivity aren't the worst part.

Nuclear winter is, caused by the black carbon smoke from the nuclear firestorms.

The Hiroshima atomic bomb caused such a firestorm.

But the story later on makes such a point about the fact like he hasn't killed anybody.

And then, of course, there's the big moment where he shows up to take control of the of the all the gang members of Gotham during the nuclear winter and the rioting that's going on in Gotham.

And he makes this whole big point of taking the gun and breaking it.

And he's like, we don't use this.

So I think similarly, you'd probably have differing opinions.

The effect that it has, though, between that and then Batman and his new gang stepping up in the fourth issue during the nuclear winter and quelling the riots and really imposing order here, now it's gotten too loud.

See, that's the problem, right, for Reagan and all of the other officials.

But the vast majority of Americans aren't hurt.

And if, you know, seven, a dozen nuclear weapons, that's not going to cause pause nuclear winter that takes hundreds to thousands of nuclear weapons going off but if one of those nuclear weapons is a high altitude detonation and takes down our electric grid it's game over at that point you're looking at 90 of the U.S population dies so a nuclear war is not that bad that's why earlier I said When we're trying to stop AGI, if necessary, we should use nuclear strikes.

If we have to immediately destroy a target before an AGI agent could be released or a bioweapon released, a nuclear strike is the way to go.

They can be low yield, very targeted.

Yes, their facilities would be able to handle that fairly well.

Again, their biggest vulnerability is if you're relying on paid staff to survive, that to me is a risk.

So let's say that there is a nuclear winter.

Is it possible they could come up at some point from these compounds at the tail end of the nuclear winter and still survive?
