You give up the ability to pause, but otherwise it's much better than on DirecTV." So I read this email while I was watching that game, and I was b- honestly, it's kinda odd that this came in like that, because when I was watching the game on the DirecTV app, I was saying to myself, "Man, that is a great picture.
Ara DerdarianHOST
8:36
I wish my father was alive to see how good the picture was." Because in the '70s, we would watch on NTSC, and the quality was not that good, and there was a lot of Bears games [laughs] that I ...

I mean, do you remember the, the term ghosting in, uh, TVs when you would have, like, a ghost image, Braden, on NTSC?
Braden RussellHOST
8:56
Yeah.
Braden RussellHOST
8:56
Yeah.
ReesHOST

But...

To be honest you don't really notice when you see this game in motion so this is the video over on Reassembler's YouTube channel and yeah if you're used to seeing the NTSC version of Sonic of course our version here in Europe was slower due to the Mega Drive running at 50 hertz rather than 60 hertz which is quite a point of discussion whenever this comes up um there we go I'll just skip ahead a little bit so we can see this running side by side, the Mega Drive version as next to the Amiga version.
ReesHOST
14:41
To be honest, the HUD is the only real noticeable difference.
ReesHOST
14:44
The speed is pretty much bang on identical to the original PAL version on the Mega Drive.

Now, the best part about this video recap, which is about a half hour, really worth watching, is that it's wrapped up in the trappings of being a Computer Chronicles-style presentation from 1982.
JasonHOST
44:32
The whole thing, like the entire half hour video, is not presented as interlaced NTSC video and character generation straight out of the SMC-70, but certain bumpers are, and right down to the kind of mushy colors, the lower quality sound, is very authentic to 1982.
JasonHOST
44:47
Sad, but glorious to say.
JasonHOST
44:50
The video does get into some of CPM's implementation quirks, which kept the operating system from ever being as truly universal as it aspired to be.

You just place the board over the bottom pins of the chip, like I was just talking about, solder just the necessary connections, and you're able to get all of those outputs without disabling RF, and you could even use this at the same time as a LumaCode mod if you wanted to.
BobHOST
15:12
The price is $30, and you just need to choose PAL or NTSC from the dropdown menu when you're checking out.
BobHOST
15:18
There's a few things to note about this.
BobHOST
15:20
First, if you wanted to, you could make this a completely no-cut mod and run all of the signals to a mini-DIN out the back, Um, or you could only run composite and maybe Luma code and audio if you wanted out the existing hole, or you could drill holes and get your output options for it.

BobHOST

But yeah, I mean, that's what I'm pretty sure about.
BobHOST
30:26
Also, regions versus DVD regions versus PAL and NTSC are two different things that are often confused.
BobHOST
30:35
And it's very common that you could have a disc that's region free or whatever region that's actually NTSC or PAL originated with the content that's on there.
BobHOST
30:45
So that's two totally different things that's DVD region versus resolution and refresh rate which is confusing and annoying too so but yeah hopefully I was able to clear that up a little bit and if I got it wrong let me know but this would I could be forgetting something but that kind of makes sense to me especially because of video standards and trying to make sure that DVD will play in all DVD players Apothecary 2 is having a bunch of HDMI handshake issues.

Welcome to the club.

Um, but now I, I should mention that the copies weren't always the best.
Ken PattersonGUEST
3:13
Uh, the way my source was able to convert the video standard PAL to NTSC was just to train an NTSC camera onto a PAL monitor and record.
Ken PattersonGUEST
3:24
Now, of course, one of those stories was The Invasion, and despite the suboptimal presentation and being incomplete, um, I just fell in love with it.
Ken PattersonGUEST
3:33
And what's not to love? You got the second Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe, the first unit story, and Cybermen menacing London.
VirajHOST
15:17
So Joe-
JoeHOST
15:17
Although, this is NTSC US.
JoeHOST
15:20
See that? So it does not work unfortunately with my PAL edition N64.
VirajHOST
15:26
Oh.
JoeHOST
15:26
But, oh, no, I have this, the Nintendo 64 Passport Plus.
JoeHOST
15:30
So with this I can play NTSC, uh, Nintendo 64-
VirajHOST
15:36
Oh, yeah
JoeHOST
15:36
... cartridges, as long as I have my PAL, uh, N64 cartridges.
Jason ScottHOST
1:07
PAL is, in many ways, the majority of how video is transported.
Jason ScottHOST
1:13
Yet, NTSC is the format that most of what I work with comes in.
Jason ScottHOST
1:20
So, when people donate PAL to me, I had to set it aside.
Jason ScottHOST
1:26
I didn't have any of the equipment.
Jason ScottHOST
1:29
Being able to handle PAL like I handle NTSC video turned out to be layers upon layers of configuration, testing, and eBay.
Jason ScottHOST
1:40
You see, first of all, you need a VCR that can read PAL.
Jason ScottHOST
1:45
You usually have to acquire those from other countries.
Jason ScottHOST
1:49
That means shipping them in.
Joe FoxHOST
17:25
Retro Love Letter, because of, uh, uh, at first, so it doesn't say when this is coming or anything.
Joe FoxHOST
17:30
It's just a trailer on YouTube so far, and it says, you know, um, it will run on the 3DO, and they're testing NTSC on physical hardware, and then they're emulating the PAL hardware, and it will run at 30 frames per second.
Joe FoxHOST
17:44
So I was like, "Okay, you know, there's gonna be a physical version of this game.
Joe FoxHOST
17:47
This must be a Kickstarter or something." But they've actually got some talent behind here.
Chris KohlerGUEST
14:06
PAL versions of games because of differences in the television refresh rates and things like that.
Chris KohlerGUEST
14:11
In this case, they run a little bit slower than the NTSC version.
Chris KohlerGUEST
14:15
So if you are from Europe and your muscle memory is based on the slower version of the game, we have that for you.
Chris KohlerGUEST
14:20
So just stick with the NTSC, the U.S. version.
Chris KohlerGUEST
14:23
And so change back that.
Chris KohlerGUEST
14:25
Then go in just to this interstitial, this screen that's between this and gameplay.
