[Instrumental music plays] Devastating rainfall can leave communities with deep scars.

People in central Japan's Noto Peninsula are remembering their loved ones who died when disaster struck two years ago.

Residents of Wajima City offered flowers on Monday at a makeshift memorial at the city hall.

They included the parents of Nakayama Miki, who died while driving home from work.

Lin said he hopes Taiwan and Japan will join hands and deepen cooperation in disaster prevention and mitigation in the future.

Taiwan has previously sent large donations to Japan following other natural disasters, such as the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and the major quake that jolted the Noto Peninsula in 2024.

Now, the Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train has fully resumed operations following the massive Kumamoto earthquake in July.

Restoration work was completed between Kumamoto and Shinminamata Stations, the last section of the line where service was suspended.

I did a road trip there, a day trip around Noto Peninsula from Toyama.

And I felt a bit sorry because, ah, why? Why? But then again, very encouraged to see how, because I went there two years ago, I've seen houses like collapse completely and was left there.

Japanese military and Coast Guard helicopters, FTMA-coordinated aircraft, and international support all converged on a coastline that roads could no longer reach.

The point is this.

Japan does not buy helicopters casually.

On September 19th, 1977, fifty-two-year-old Yutaka Kume vanished without a trace from the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan.

What initially appeared to be a simple local disappearance spiraled into a massive international incident, likely involving North Korean agents.

Kume, a security guard employed at Tokyo's Mitaka City Hall, had traveled to the scenic coastal area reportedly for a short trip.

The day before he disappeared, he phoned a colleague and casually mentioned, quote, "I'm at a hot spring in the Noto Peninsula right now," which would be the last time anyone heard from him.

The next day, Kume was seen walking along a beach near the town of Ushitsu in Noto, and then he simply never returned.

Initial efforts to find Kume yielded few clues, and local police combed the coastline and interviewed residents, but no witnesses could clearly explain what happened that evening.
