On today's episode, we watch 1986's Nothing in Common.

It's a dramatic comedy starring America's dad Tom Hanks and Hollywood legend Jackie Gleason.

Directed by Gary Marshall, written by Rick Podell, Michael Preminger, and Gary Marshall, it follows a carefree, successful advertising executive that has his life come crashing to a halt when his parents unexpectedly divorce.

Tom Hanks is a, is a young up and coming superstar.

Yes.

The film is nothing in common.

And your father is in it.

Um, by no means is that, like, a knock on Hanks.

Uh, because until he did something like Every Time We Say Goodbye or Nothing in Common, which by the way, neither one of those reached audiences on, like, a significantly major level, Tom didn't really show he was capable of reaching dramatic heights.

Uh, this phase consistently shows him as kind of like an average guy in ridiculous circumstances.

Uh, he's dependent, some might say overly dependent, on physical comedy.

And there was a song by the Thompson twins from it.

She played the sophisticated, mysterious Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant in North by Northwest.

She did other films like Rain Tree County, Exodus, Grand Prix, The Stalking Moon, Nothing in Common, Because of Winn-Dixie, and yes, Superman Returns.

She also enjoyed a long television career, and there's one performance you gotta check out.

It was a two-part miniseries on NBC called People Like Us in 1990 that won her an Emmy.

She played Martha Kent in the 2006 Superman Returns.

She was in Nothing in Common, which is a great Tom Hanks film with, what's, Jackie Gleason as well.

Her last, her last role was in Winter's Tale with Colin Farrell a couple years back.

Um, anyway, she passed away.

The movie was with Tom Hanks, Jackie Gleason, and Eva Marie Saint was in the movie as well.

It was called Nothing in Common.

I thought it was a very, very good movie.

But then again, I'm a Gleason fan.

There was a certain symbolism to that gesture that the audience felt.
