Compilations like The Shorts Flex Your Head or The UK's Not So Quiet on the Western Front served as travel guides for a listener who had no internet.

The curators, often just a few band members, picked songs that represented an entire geographic or thematic soundscape, and the label's name followed it across shelves worldwide.

These samplers gave newcomers instant legitimacy, even if the bands themselves had never toured beyond their town.
