North York Moors

So it's sort of right in the middle of the country, although it is classed as north.

It makes a great base for the Yorkshire Dales, the Yorkshire Moors, the Yorkshire Coasts.

All of those are within about an hour's reach from the city of York itself.

It's very easy to get to as an international traveller.

It depends whether you want to do history or shopping or hiking or just have a day on the beach.

Absolutely.

And of course, there's a North Yorkshire Moors Railway as well, which is very popular.

It is.

This is, like, a massive trauma for you.

Anyway, [laughs] so Charlotte Brontë is the third of six children, to remind people, born to Patrick Brontë and Maria Branwell in this Yorkshire village of Thornton, and when she's four, they move to a parsonage at Haworth on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors, and Patrick has got basically a full-time job there.

Now, Patrick is an extraordinary character.

We talked about him in the Wuthering Heights episode.

It is just such a cool period.

So I live up in kind of the foothills of North York Moors and all the monasteries are, you know, there's hundreds of monks there, kind of thriving businesses.

It is just so exciting.

Yeah, it's a great period, and there's so much division and conflict across the whole of the known world, the whole of Europe at the time, and obviously the game is going to be set in Europe, that, yeah, it's a great period.

um

but the other games from jason i'm like oh yeah i could play that endlessly he i i don't think he's ever i can't think of a game where jason's reached back to a game and tried to redo it right And this Gamescom we played down in Hawes in the Yorkshire Moors.

I've got to give a shout out because I was talking to Joe Prince about this.

We played a game of Night Witches.

Yeah.

And by that point, we were driving across the North Yorkshire Moors in the middle of the night, and there was, like, snow and sleet coming onto the windscreen, and the music's very dramatic.

Yeah.

Like, that, you know, that album, The Bends, is a huge album.

I haven't the time to be traipsing up and down the Yorkshire Moors chasing your drunken shadow like some wastrel.

Similarly, though we tend to assume that life in the medieval cloister was rather cushy, a surprising number of monks felt themselves to be under intolerable pressure.

Whenever I visit Riovo Abbey, now a picturesque ruin in the North York Moors National Park, I spare a thought for Matthew, a thirteenth-century monk there, who complained to his friend William, the prior of nearby Byland, that his duties as precentor were making him ill.

He felt that, from the bottom of my feet to the very top of my head, there is no peace in my bones, and was also suffering from stomach pains and exhaustion.

His job was, he complained, too much for one elderly man, and he was sure that it would kill him.
