Bernalillo County commissioners voted to allow a controversial North Valley mosque to move forward.
Gino GutierrezHOST
Commissioners voted 4-1 on Wednesday to deny an appeal seeking to pause the development of the 45,000-square-foot Albuquerque Islamic Center mosque near Alameda and 2nd Street.
Gino GutierrezHOST
The appeal raised concerns about traffic, noise, and the project's impact on the surrounding neighborhoods.
Gino GutierrezHOST
The project will include several conditions, including a required traffic study and a ban on amplified sound outside the building.

The Islamic Center also withdrew its plans for a school on the property.

Commissioner Walt Benson, whose district includes the site, was the lone favor in favor of the appeal, citing existing traffic problems in the North Valley.

The decision prompted cheers from mosque supporters and protests from opponents outside and inside the commission chambers.
