North Sumatra

Tell us about it.

So we're just back from an amazing mission strip in North Sumatra.

Got invited to go and share the gospel in four different prisons, multiple churches, hospitals, schools, kids programs, a bundle of things.

It's been flat out, but.

Alfira, I mean, you know, did you grow up with stories of the Indonesian Kakawin Ramayana, the way we would have grown up with retellings of the Ramayana or the Prahlak Pralam?

Actually, I was born in Australia and my mother is Achenese, so that's Northern Sumatra.

And when we would go back to Indonesia, we would go to places like Borobudur and Prambanan to learn about it, but I was very small.

So I didn't really understand it until I went to the Institute of the Arts in Java, in Yogyakarta and then in Surakarta.

When did your love for the horror genre begin? Was it early in the age or did you grow up watching horror films? But why horror? I

grew up in a place in North Sumatra, in a city.

It's a big city, but... was not very conducive for a little kid growing up.

Crimes are very high.

April 27th, 1997.

In a small village in North Sumatra, Indonesia, a group of young men were hard at work in a sugar cane field.

But then something strange caught their eye.

It was a large mound of dirt they'd never seen before, piled high as if it were a grave.

[orangutan swinging from tree] It does sound rather relaxing, doesn't it? Well, the Tapanuli orangutan is the world's rarest great ape and one of the most endangered primates on Earth.

Fewer than 800 are thought to remain in the wild, and their only habitat in northern Sumatra is under growing pressure from deforestation and the fragmentation of its forests.

But that could be about to change.

Now technology in space is being used to help protect them.

Airbus Foundation, the nonprofit branch of the plane maker and the charity Connected Conservation Foundation, have selected six projects around the world as part of their Satellites for Biodiversity awards.

One of the six projects is run by local environmentalists in Sumatra helping the orangutan.

Airbus will provide them with imagery from satellites they operate in orbit around Earth and other tech expertise.

But yes, Jocko grew up watching these movies in North Sumatra, and he would watch movies through, I think, the fan vent because he couldn't afford to go in them as a kid.

But that's how he saw Putra's movies.

And he, you know, was inspired, always wanted to be a filmmaker after seeing Suswara Gautama Putra's movies.

And then just like what Corporal also said, so many of us here is Balinese and then we have, they have responsibility.

So I'm not Balinese, I'm Batangnese, I came from North Sumatra.

But a lot of people complain about, ah, so many ceremony in Bali, ah, they cannot work, they cannot do this, they cannot do that, ah, here we go again, they're gonna have another holidays.

Mate, you live in Bali, right? So that's what they do.
