Both you and I, we live here, we can see all the construction activity.

T5, that's Terminal 5 for some of our listeners, the Long Island project, that's a coastal protection project, Cross Island Line, North-South Corridor, and many, many more.

These infrastructure projects can provide multi-year order book pipeline for construction-related companies.

Great.

But what happens when a major cross-island project is delayed by another... two years.

The 21.5km north-south corridor will now open in phases from 2029 instead of 2027.

The Land Transport Authority says the delay is due to unexpected challenging ground conditions and the complexity of the work.

For residents and shops in the area closest to the worksite, the news was a pretty big blow, with business owners already struggling with sharp drops in revenue.

But imagine the scale of the project we are talking about for North-South Corridor.

The width of the tunnel is already like the size of an Olympic-sized swimming pool, almost 50 meters.

We want to further pick on his engineering brain there.

Singapore's North-South Corridor is now set to open in phases from 2029 That is two years later than originally planned.

The Land Transport Authority has pointed to difficult ground conditions and other construction challenges at several locations along the route.

So how much of this could reasonably have been anticipated through engineering studies? And how much could the delay eventually add to the projects built?

Yeah, let's speak again to David Ng, Chairman, Civil and Structural Engineering Technical Committee, Institution of Engineers Singapore.

David, if the difficult ground conditions are really confined to only a few locations along a 21.5km corridor, how can problems at these relatively small sections really delay the entire project by two years? Does that then suggest that these locations sit on the project's critical path?

In fact, the North-South Corridor alignment of 22 kilometers, actually ranging, coming from the south, coming to the southern side, which is near the marina, towards the north, which is the woodland area, actually traverse through very challenging ground condition, ranging from very soft marine clay in the downtown area to very hard rock in the central and the northern side.

So the ground condition itself is very challenging.

Bad news.

That praying is going to have to go on for a A little longer because the north-south corridor, which is meant to ease up the traffic on the CTE and everywhere else, is getting delayed by two years.

Now, this is the big tunnel expressway that is linking Woodlands to Sembawang all the way down through the city.

Above ground, there's an above ground viaduct and then there's the underground as well.

At over 8,100 meters above sea level, Mount Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world.

The 21.5-kilometer north-south corridor linking the northern towns to the city will be delayed by two years.

The LTA says unexpectedly difficult ground conditions, including harder rock and underground water seepage, have made construction more complex.

The viaduct from Admiralty West to Lentor Avenue will now open in stages from 2029, while the tunnel section to East Coast Parkway will open from 2031.
