In other news, folks, we're going to go across the river over to New Jersey out of North Bergen, where a massive transportation project is reaching a major milestone.

Officials there were gathering as preparations move forward for tunnel boring machines to begin digging for the new Hudson River Rail Tunnel.

The project will eventually create the first new passenger rail tunnel under the Hudson in more than a century.

It's expected to serve more than 200,000 daily riders traveling between New York and New Jersey.

The first machines will dig roughly a mile through the palisades between North Bergen and Weehawken.

Project officials say the machines can advance about 30 feet per day, with a later phase eventually carrying construction underneath the Hudson toward Manhattan.

The new tunnel is part of the larger Gateway Program, and it's being built alongside plans to rehabilitate the existing century-old North River Tunnel.

And on the second phase of construction, it will run beneath the Hudson, connecting New Jersey to Manhattan.
