Noises Off...

A common bit in farces is to have characters coming in and out of multiple doors in a set, generally unbeknownst to each other.

A prime example is Michael Franz's, I hope I said that right, hilarious farce about a farce, Noises Off.

That is my all-time favorite play.

Really? I've never seen

And I just, I want to throw something else out because as much as I love Christopher Reeve as Superman, some of his other films are really great.

And one of my favorites of his is a film called Noises Off.

Mm-hmm.

Which is a comedy that he's in with Carol Burnett and Michael Caine and John Ritter.

It just felt so superficial and I didn't get on with the sense of humour at all.

I mean, it kind of reminded me of, didn't we do, what's the film based on the play Noises Off? Michael

Frank.

Did we do it for the podcast? I don't think so.

It reminded me of Noises Off, which is this kind of, again, a broad comedy without much subtext to it, without much meaning to it, other than...

It's a farce.

I mean, this is what farces do.

Okay, we already talked about lexontech.org. You might remember that because it was 12 seconds ago.

But I also want to say, you may recall I had spoken on this show about how I was going to audition for Noises Off.

Lauren and I watched the movie and then we decided we auditioned for the play and whatever.

It was fun.

And then tell them about the revelation that you had towards the end.

Oh, that this was basically noises off? It's a farce? Yes.

I got that when I got the impression of people slamming doors and opening doors, that kind of, you know... slamming doors sex romp comedy that was a thing for a while, especially in the 70s.

And think of all the carry-on films, that kind of thing.

It

was just a farcical sex comedy.

And if you haven't watched Noises Off, then this won't mean anything to you.

But if you haven't watched Noises Off, you probably should.

We gave her a lot to chew up and spit out.

And at the time, I think in the second season she was doing noi- Noises Off, so she had, like, this incredibly physical show on top of this incredibly verbal show, and she just handled it all like an Olympian.

It was incredible to watch.

Um, but she would just, you know, keep running lines with me, and every once in a while improvise a joke that would just completely kill me.
