No Labels

And my experience meter a year ago was zero in terms of actually doing it.

I've been very, very interested and engaged in political movements, no labels, which brings together centrists in the House to forge good legislation for a number of years.

So I'm not a babe in the woods, but it was certainly a challenge to get an organization up and running.

In terms of the other candidates, yeah, I've written a few checks to them because we got to spread the wealth and help each other.

We've had Governor Christy Todd Whitman on.

Joe Lieberman had been on this show.

We've had a lot of folks that are involved on or around No Labels, but also Forward Party specifically.

Can you talk about, frankly, what does the forward angle bring to your race? You're listed, I think, technically maybe as a forward candidate, but talk about what forward has brought to your race in particular that is advantageous, maybe even challenging.

So he's I'm inviting some mayors and elected leaders to come and hear them out.

The other thing, Jeff, that's interesting is he was the co-chair of No Labels with former U.S.

Senator Joe Manchin from my home state of West Virginia.

And he's going to be talking a little about the defensiveness of politics and, you know, how we can bring more independence in the fold.

It is time for another edition of Meet the Candidates.

This morning, we're talking with Terry Ann Hurahan, the No Labels candidate for governor of Arizona.

Now, Hurahan is an Arizona native.

Shaw is running against Republican Jay Feeley in Arizona's first congressional district, one of the most competitive seats in the country.

His campaign spokesperson confirms he's referring to the No Labels Party, which is a third party actively trying to change its name to the Arizona Independent Party.

The party chair, Paul Johnson, says he doesn't think Shaw is misleading voters by calling the party by another name.

No, not at all.

I think, to be honest with you, I think, and we said this during the whole trial, most people see us as being the party that represents independence anyway.

The No Labels Party tried to rename itself last year, but was blocked in court after both Democrats and Republicans sued.

Johnson says he'll continue the appeals process after the midterms.

He was the chief media advisor for five winning presidential primary and general election campaigns.

And dedicated to bipartisanship, Mark helped start No Labels.

He's been a regular columnist for The Daily Beast, The London Daily Telegraph, and Vanity Fair, and was a consultant to the HBO show The Newsroom and Netflix's House of Cards.

But I think that you're conflating Charlie's provocative and accurate descriptions of American politics with calls for political violence, but those are not the same thing.

There has been a surge in interest in the group on college campuses.

M-Morning Edition here on NPR put together a piece.

Our reporter was at Grand Canyon University.

She spoke to people like Hazel Roberts, who said since Charlie's passing, "There's been a lot of hate from the right, and it really showed that Charlie was the glue that held us together." Others said they disagree with things like the war in Iran, uh, US relationships with Israel.

And Andrew Colvette Speaking for Turning Point USA, this is from Politico, said in a statement that the group is facing a confluence of challenges.

I- is one of them not as favorable a view of where the Trump administration is going?

Uh, I'm not sure if it's quite that, but it is, I would say, identical with the problem that President Trump and the GOP is facing, which the- is that there are fissures over these issues.

And here's what I'm going to do today.

You know, when I went to when I started to run or was planning to run, I did the statement of interest.

I changed parties to Republican.

I actually didn't realize that we could I didn't even realize that No Labels Party was a thing.

Well, I don't

You know, I, I think, um, where young people could go, um, on this.

The, the, what concerns me is no labels, which is a group from the center.

Um, that is, um,

from the center though, because their funding is Republican.

So, Um, all it costs was an RV and tuition for

right.

The, the, so no labels is, um, in some ways a well organized group that, you know, may succeed because they've been able to raise money and, and getting on the ballot in all 50 states, and they are threatening to run a coalition ticket of a Republican and a Democrat.

They are now saying a Republican will be at the top of the ticket and a Democrat will be vice president.
