Absolutely.
Katie LushGUEST

That's when we had, um, a no-fault divorce happen to come in the same year that it dipped below replacement, which has also had an impact on, um, birth rates because marriage is no longer, um, as stable as it was.
Katie LushGUEST
13:40
And so that impacts choices around, um, having children.
Lyle SheltonHOST
13:46
Mm.
Katie LushGUEST

... um, after that.
Katie LushGUEST

So-

Let's just clarify something here, too, because, um, there may well be some people watching or listening today who- who would say, "Well, isn't no-fault divorce a good thing?" And I think you and I would be the first to say that we wouldn't want anyone to be in an abusive marriage, um-
Katie LushGUEST

Yeah

People think that the judge is like some magical god who's going to look over everything that's been done and that we've always got to, well, the judge is going to see it like there's some kind of parental figure that's going to read everything and adjudicate whether you've been good or bad, which in my experience doesn't happen, except maybe on very rare occasions.
Eve StanwayHOST
20:38
But also there's this idea that if we admit something or let something go, we're going to be proved to be wrong and proved to be a bad person.
Eve StanwayHOST

And I think that the change in the law to no-fault divorces, it was designed to remove that, but it's still very much in place that somebody has to be a goody and a baddie.
Eve StanwayHOST
20:59
Do you think that? What do you think about that? Do you think that's going to
Colette BainGUEST

happen? an important thing to say up front is i think no fault divorce was the best change we've made yeah through the law but what what it has potentially had the inadvertent consequence is you used to get to your divorce petition say all these horrible things get them off your chest feel seen because you know that had gone before a judge whoever had that allegation to make or whatever it was felt like oh good right i've almost had my day in court with that i feel so much better right what's next whereas now people are coming in going i'm about to explode and i need to vent somewhere and yeah okay they can vent to me but that's nowhere near as satisfying as feeling seen by particularly so then people are bringing it into the other elements to the finances and the children because now that's that's a sad state of affairs and we try and work away from that but They're only human at the end of the day.

Um, I also wanna throw one more thing into the mix.
Terry BarberHOST

I probably won't get to all of these items, Father Murr, but the Texas Republicans are looking to end no-fault divorce.
Terry BarberHOST

Well, it was 1969.
Charles MurrGUEST

I've the statistics.
Terry BarberHOST
11:10
It's very, it's horrendous, and I'm just wanting to see more, again, of our Church speaking like this because we need to stand up for marriage.
Terry BarberHOST
11:20
And, you know, here we have, we have politicians standing more for ending no-fault divorce than some people inside the Church.
Terry BarberHOST
11:28
So stay with us.
Christopher BulekHOST

Or, I mean, super young baby boomers or old Gen X.
Christopher BulekHOST
69:30
And Generation X came around, and No Fault Divorce became... super common and they're, they're like the marriages began eroding and like basically every single, every single societal problem that we have came from gen X and, and millennials sort of exacerbated it.
Christopher BulekHOST
69:52
But I think, I think most millennials, like we've, we've been living under these conditions for our entire lives.
Christopher BulekHOST

Most millennials,
