Ninigret

Canonicus and the sachems were not convinced.

Except for one, Ninigret, sachem of the Niantic.

Ninigret hated Philip, and he liked the English.

He privately told the emissary that, quote, "He will not hazard his people, nor the peace of his people, for a company of bloody persons that have not only killed the English, but killed his people likewise." End quote.

This was the thin end of a wedge which would soon split the Niantic from the rest of the Narragansett.

After Wickford, all five sachems sent their own emissaries to Boston, and Ninigret's man came with a special message.

He suggested a nice piece of theater.

Ninigret would hand over all Pocasset in his custody to the English, who would then return them to him.
